Or maybe it's the Apostolic Blessing from Pope John Paul II reproduced on the back cover. In any case, Demi artistically captures the nun's mission, especially in her use of Christian and Indian decorative motifs to enhance the gritty reality of India and its poor. However, Demi seems so enamored of her subject that she piles on the facts, leading to a text that is slowed by its weight. There are dramatic moments, as when young Agnes hears the call to religious life or awakens to the disease and misery around her. But gospel quotes aren't always well integrated, and there's too much about financial donations and what they bought. This is a beautiful book that tells the life of MT. I bought it for my girls when we went to the Final Profession of my good friend becoming an MC. She read it and enjoyed it, but told me that MC's had never pulled buggies in India!

I love all of the books Demi has written. The words and illustrations flow so beautifully together. Everyone should add Demi,to their collection.

long book, not a short bedtime story for children, this would take several days to read through (or hours). Pretty art of course!

Best book ever! Used library books tend to be well - used.

I am really angry to have received a copy of the book which is black and white. It looks like a photo copied version inside a color paperback cover. In fact, the very last page has print which says, "Made in USA, Lexington, KY, 27 August 2012". What a dishonest way to sell a book!! Nothing in the product description says this will be a black and white copied version of the book. There are no copyright pages or title pages. This is the worst purchase from Amazon I have ever made, and I will be returning it.

It's not often the words "work of art" and "biography" go together in the same description. In fact I'd have to say that up until recently I was of the general opinion that children's biographies tended to be dull and uninteresting-mostly written for the purpose of providing children with the pedestrian facts they require on research assignments. Authors/ illustrators like Demi have served to change that opinion drastically. And her latest title, Mother Teresa, is a picture book biography that is also a true work of art.Those readers who already know Demi will immediately recognize her stylistic and vividly colored illustrations in this book. Rich gold ink and brilliant scarlet make the pages come to life with a dramatically Eastern flair. Each illustrated page is a marvelous picture in its own right. Its no wonder Demi is an award-winner illustrator. She's illustrated more than 130 books for children, and her artwork appears not only in books and galleries, but also in the dome of St. Peter and Paul's church in Wilmington. I can only say that she truly brings the biography to life. This picture book account provides young and older audiences alike with the story of Mother Teresa, her mission to help the poor and her influence around the world. While the actual text is fairly brief, due to the format, it provides dates and events highlighting the turning points and important themes of Mother Teresa's life. Added to the text are prayer quotes, biblical quotes and quotes from Mother Teresa herself. These help to break up the life events, and add perspective and beauty to the book.At the very end of the book, Demi includes a listing of what is necessary for Mother Teresa to be declared a saint as well as a list of awards and honors that she was given in her lifetime. While, as I have said, the format prevents this from being an exhaustive account, it is an excellent introduction to Mother Teresa and the life she lived. The religious and spiritual aspects of the biography are handled with grace and respect without the book becoming preachy or judgmental about how that faith is expressed. And Demi's masterful art pulls the text together to create a wonderful tribute to a woman who had such a profound influence on the world.This book will probably be a bit complex for younger readers, unless a parent chooses to read it to them. The site recommends this book for ages 4-8, but I would amend that to closer to ages 6-12 with the added suggestion that this is a book that adults can appreciate as well. For more thorough exploration of the subject, readers may want to look for other books, but this is a good starting point. Those of you who enjoy this biography may want to look for Demi's other biographies that include such figures as Gandhi, Muhammad, and Buddha. The words tell an amazing story simply, just as she lived... telling where she went, how she followed her calling, and how God unfolded miracles in the lives she touched because she was obedient and loving. It is the simplicity of the telling that allows the story to be so powerful. The drawings are authentic to the cultures in which she lives, an artistic feast that is always just right, honest, and beautiful. The story is accessible to children, but is richly satisfying to teens and adults who can enjoy it on another level altogether. It is reverent, loving, and beautiful, like the woman it honors.

Ruby came up a lot in those searches.I am teaching myself various programming languages for quite some time with mixed results. I'm happy to say that this book has helped me tremendously with Ruby.The book is very well organized and written, the author doesn't rush you through anything and it has a nice pace to it. About half of the book are examples and that is where you will learn the most, actually.This isn't just for beginners, I would say that it can be very useful for more experienced in Ruby too. Anybody can refresh their knowledge and brush up on Ruby with this book. I really like it, recommended.

Good for beginners, I always recommend these little books because I feel they help me to get the Ruby language to sink into my brain the more I read and practice the exercises. Good to add to other Ruby learning books and material. It is a quick read and has simple practice examples.

I've used these books with numerous children to help inspire their passion for trees: they were so clear and artistically managed that four-year olds have gone on nature walks with me and managed to properly identify sassafras and different types of pine.The clarity of the Golden Guide Trees more than compensates for its smaller size. Highly recommended.

Bought this book to update the ones we have at our cabin which were published in the 1950s (according to the hand written birthday note in the inside cover with the year). Well.. I havent done an exact side by side comparison but as far as I can tell from reading them they have made no changes to the contents of the book.

I love Golden Guides. I got my first as a kid in the 60’s. I still have all of mine & am now buying them for my grandchildren. Not at all babyish, great illustrations, with informative written detail.

I am a hobbyisnt woodworker that wanted to know a bit more about trees. This book made me look at trees a lot different. Now, when i go on runs, i don't stop staring at trees and trying to guess what they are. When I'm walking around i can pull up this guide on my phone and semi-easily identify which tree I am looking at.However, the formatting could be a bit more consistent in this guide. For example, some trees don't have maps, some trees dont have illustrations. Also, the start of new types of trees are shown differently (oaks had a small description and then descriptions for each oak while maple had a large centered heading and then the descriptions of each maple)

This book is an excellent field guide, as is the rest of the Golden Guides. I carry this on me when I'm in the field at work for quick identification of species. While it is a smaller book and does not have an extensive amount of information on each species, it has just enough to know what you are looking at in the field so you can research at a later date, saving you from lugging a huge identification key around.

I found it a little disappointing when I realized it only showcased North American insects. However, considering the sheer amount of species of bugs that exist the world, there is just no reasonable way to fit so much info into a field guide as small as this. It does a good job of summarizing the main orders.

Best insect field guide for hikes. Small, hand sized. Easy to navigate with just enough insects to begin to identify what we saw. Not good for exact identification, but a great start.

Very good-quality book.I lend it out to my friends every now & again.Has drawings, not pictures, but they are very accurate and easy to read & understand.Has a few pages dedicated only to Oak Trees leaves & acorns, too!(White Oak p85, Black Oak p97, and their acorns)Of course, lots of other trees, too! Since kids are my toughest customers when it comes to food, I had to purchase this book. I find that I like some of the recipes better than my kids. They have liked some of the things I have prepared from the book. I think this is very well written although I did stumble a bit at the metric measurements but have been happy to better learn the metric system and apply it in the kitchen.

Beautiful book. Lots of recipes that anyone, not just children can enjoy. The science section is well written with great pictures. Love the book. It will be a "keeper" along with all my other books on LCHF and will sit next to my book titled, "The Art and Science of Low Carb Living".

Love this book!. Very well written and gorgeous pictures! Excellent recipes. But only follow these recommendations if you want to optimize your child's physical and brain development, while drastically reducing dental disease. All others can stick with a processed food diet. I have come to realize that any work done by Tim Noakes and his Foundation is FIRST CLASS!!!!. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK PROFESSOR NOAKES!

My Man studies this book. He wants to feed our kids like this. I see there is no sugar, not even agave. I like that. I can give up sugar. Then you cannot eat rice or potatoes or pasta, just meat fat fat cheese avocados milk cream...etc...but no grains. No SUGAR. I also think Tim Noakes is getting sued by sugar industry this month, they dont want his anti sugar message out there especially for kids.

I really appreciate the recipes in here, but at least with my kids, getting them to eat most of the dishes will be extremely challenging. Making it harder is that this is written using South African type dishes and ingredients (i.e. courgettes and aubergines). Still there is enough useful information to be helpful.Major cons: I wish they would have provided nutrition information for each recipe (carb content etc.) and some of the prep work is not well explained in the recipes.

Very useful and helpful book with easy-to-do recipes. Suits for the whole family :-)

This the guide line plan my granddaughter has gotten from her baby's doctor on when to feed him solid food and what to feed him. She is so very glad she has it.

This is a great book, in an era of confusion about food & nutrition this book has expert advice on the best foods to help your children grow up as healthy as possible
