When I found the Apple Training Series, I found the books that spoke to the way I learn - hands on. I have had a Mac for two years, limping by from PC world to Mac world via calls to the shop and fiddling around ...I was never a hearty PC user to begin with. I have purchased several manuals for my Mac (lets say in the close to $150+ range of investment). All of the books seemed to teach from a place of previous knowledge and nomenclature.The Apple Training Series teaches in a project based environment - that means .. not only can I look up something specific to what I am doing, but the hands on method sticks. As I learned my first project in Keynote I found there were overlaps I could immediately apply to Pages and Numbers - Fantastic!! and can not recommend it highly enough for the Mac convert, new user or the Mac user that wants to refine what they already do comfortably.

I like the practical approach to learning rather than the presentation of theory and ideas. However, having stated that it is my opinion there are some steps in completing the exercise that the author pre-supposes the reader has more than fundamental knowledge of the subject. The answer is there but the search for it is occasionally frustrating limiting my evaluation to 3 stars. I have only just completed Keynote and can't as yet comment on Pages or Numbers. I will say that I'm really very impressed with the professional presentations you can create as your proficiency improves. One other fact you should consider prior to purchasing the components of iWork at the App Store. iWork 11 is rumored to be released shortly and I'm not certain whether or not Apple will offer customers who recently purchase the application a discounted price.

This a great book for anyone wanting to learn iWork 09. One caveat is that it has not been updated for Mac OS Lion so there is no "Save As" option in the File menu for Lion. If you are running Lion, then some exercises won't work, eg, saving as a template using the Save As way. You can finish this book over a weekend and you will learn something new. All the iWork apps are intuitive and you can eventually find out how to do certain things but there a few things you would miss because they are so easy to do (compared to MS Office apps) that you'll say "Wow, that's it!. I've been using these apps for a while but bought this book just to see how I can maximize these apps and and see if I can be more efficient ... which I think happened.I also took the Apple Certified Associate - iWork test right after reading this book the first time and aced it. If you plan to take the test, then assume it is based on this book ... meaning there is a Save As option still (see above).There is maybe one or two errors in the exercises but you can figure it out ... no biggie. One surprise is the high quality color photos/screenshots in this book. Other books in the Apple Training Series are in black and white and/or lack screenshots.Lastly, this is not a comprehensive or advanced manual but more than enough for the daily user. I expected that and that's why I gave it a five star rating.

I do training for middle school teachers. I redesigned the book's well structured lessons for our staff. The lessons have good examples and accent the essentials of each applications. It saved me a lot of time preparing the training. I can't thank the writers enough.One of the problems with the iWork applications is that they require a different mind set, but I believe that anyone working through these helpful lessons will, in a few hours, become proficient and wonder why the applications seemed so difficult at first.

I purchased this book to show me everything I needed to know to pass my iWork Associate Certification. I had successfully passed the iLife Associate Certification using Apple Training Series: iLife 09 from the same publisher, so I knew what to expect.One has to remember that it's not a general how-to guide or "missing manual" type book, as it is geared towards teaching what is on Apple's certification syllabus. So those wanting to know everything there is to know about iWork should probably look elsewhere.However, this book was perfect for my needs, and I'm sure even experienced iWork users could still learn a thing or two from reading it. If you're considering doing your iWork certification, this is required reading. It also comes with a code for $20 off the cost of the certification exam, which enhances its value even further.All in all, a highly recommended book.

I like the book a lot. I was hoping to find a book that will teach me how to use the apps in iLife like the book from my college is teaching me Microsoft Office. It is very much like it. My book at school has a bit more of an interactive website that gives you test exercises and automatically grades them. It would be cooler and I would have given 5 stars for the book if it had a companion site like that. It does come with downloadable files that you can work along with the book and it gives you a completed work to compare your work with though. Overall, pretty good for a book to teach yourself with.

The is a great teaching item if you want to learn how to use Iwork 09. DVD contains useful exercises and then a completed file to compare your work too. Keynote lessons are interesting and useful. Also like how the author introduces "pages" or "numbers" in "keynote" so when you get to those lessons you already have some familiarity with them. Doing the exercises really helps to learn the lessons and/or go back to them when necessary. Does not try to cover every possible item but does refer you to other help so, you don't get the feeling your on overload. Highly recommended for someone who wants to learn the "correct way" rather than "gues and get it done some how".

It's a good study guide. You must have a very pronounced ability to use your instrument to tackle some of the more advanced lessons available. But it's a good lesson guide and I recommend it to all serious musicians.

But despite the vast power of the cerebral cortex we still do not understand that most implacable of mysteries, our neurologically (and bodily) based selves. Laura Weed in her vastly edifying "The Structure of Thinking" sheds an enormous amount of light into the dark recesses of the human mind. Weed's book is one of the best accounts of what thought is, and what it is not. Thought, according to Weed, isn't reducible to syntax, thought is not just an algorithm or computer program, the crunching of abstract symbols as part of some sort of neuronally based computation. Thought requires an 'intentional' aspect, a point of view, and our neural systems have evolved to interpret, categorize, or mark out aspects of our experience in specific ways, ways that are not reducible to computation. Weed provides some very creative and original ways of reassessing our approach to consciousness, including a very promising discussion on 'intentional causation' or what Weed dubs 'Kausation' as a way of overcoming difficulties associated with the notion of 'efficient causation' which dominates most thinking in the cognitive sciences. My summary here is necessarily an over simplification of a rich and very subtle book. English Writing is bad and explanation is far from good. Hardly to understand the sections even with enough excellent knowledge from other assembly languages. There are a lot forward declarations, clearly not explained well when the time comes. Not all instruction's syntax is defined so it cannot be used as reference. Not good for beginners or experts.

I am thrilled at how amazing the book is. Very clear. I was regret to not buy it at the beginning at the semester.

This one has always been a hard read even in print, but the Kindle version is unimaginably bad at any level (vertical or horizontal). That being said, Shandler absolutely decimates the competition in terms of predictions and analysis. So buy at your risk - and with a magnifying glass. Avoid Kindle.

I've used the Shandler book for years for my Strat-o-matic keeper leagues. A different animal from Fantasy but still quite useful, and I have preferred it over BP.This book is best used by looking at each player's numbers yourself and looking for guys, for instance, with a high K rate. It's how I locked into Edwin Diaz last year.I took off a star because its prognostications can be off. Just for instance, it had Candelario, JP Crawford and Robles in their top 10 prospects (current year stats only not future) for 2018. Meanwhile it had Andujar and Buehler outside the top 40 (below Carson Kelly) and misidentified Andujar as a "legitimate 3B" which in a sim league is important to know he's actually seen as a liability in the field. Not to mention, JUAN SOTO did not even get a mention anywhere in the book. Lest you think "no one knew" he would be so good, BP alluded to him being "the Dominican Bryce Harper" and had him ranked #22 among prospects.So, if you only do fantasy and it's not a keeper or dynasty league, I think you still should get this book, but if you're in a sim league or keeper/dynasty situation you should either skip this or ideally buy this along with BP to get better prospect and future-oriented analysis.

It's an annual tradition to give this book to my husband for Christmas--he plays fantasy baseball (has been in the same league with the same bunch of guys for 30 years now, since before any of it was available online. This book gives him a great edge when approaching the baseball season draft. My husband loves it because "it gives a simple capsule of analysis and information about the best 850 players in MLB" that can help him pick the players he wants for his fantasy teams.

My book did not having any pages missing. Great book, year after year. Consistent with their analysis. Baseball Forecaster > Prospectus.

Stats on overload. This book is for those of us in the deepest, serious money leagues. Well written and explained logically vs. this is just what I think this guy is going to or not going to do this year.

I have been using the publication for close to 10 years now. Focuses on skill over statistics. Articles are well written and informative. Good for casual players but really geared toward the hardcore fantasy player. I use my so much it is virtually falling apart by August!!!

I've used this book for years and it's been excellent. But this year there was a printing error in which the Batters were repeated in the pitcher section. I'm missing all the pitchers after Joe Biagini to Adam Morgan. Basically all the pitchers from B to M. They repeated the batters. I need the most help with pitchers too, so this book this year is basically worthless. I may not purchase again next year.

I really wanted to like this book. I did. I hate giving a bad review, but I was so let down by this one that I feel I don't have a choice.Having read Les Standiford's Last Train to Paradise a few years ago, I was familiar with the story of the Florida East Coast Railway's Key West Extension and the horrific 1935 Labor Day hurricane. I wanted to learn more about the railroad, and was hoping this book would--based upon its title alone--be an even more exhaustive telling of how the railroad came to be, its operation, and its end. Unfortunately, it still leaves many questions unanswered. The author never quite achieves a true narrative for the story. Instead, it attempts to tell the reader about the Key West Extension through what can only be called a loose series of anecdotes, facts, and eyewitness accounts. Many of these are interesting on their own, but they collectively don't tell a story.Early within the book the author informs us that there are only a handful of books that have ever authoritatively told the story of the railroad. Indeed, in the introduction, Bramson states that the detailed story of its construction and ultimate destruction is best told by a couple of other titles, but that his book will fill in missing details never before told. I immediately wondered why I didn't purchase THOSE books instead. In that same introduction and throughout the book, he disparages other writers for either getting the story wrong, or for not having researched either the FEC archives or his own personal files (the "Bramson Archive," the glories of which are extolled time and again by the author). As a reader, I don't care about what's wrong with another book or article not in my possession, and I don't care about how extensive the author's own personal collection of source material might be. I just want the story that was promised to me.Surprisingly, for a book written by someone so familiar with the FEC and so steeped in archival research, there are a lot of basics missing from the book to make it stand out as an authoritative history. There are many good photos supplied in the book--in fact, this is its greatest strength--but surprisingly few maps other than a couple of archival images that lack any detail. There is no index provided, and no footnotes given (the author cites unnamed "Internet sources" at one point). And for an author bent upon pointing out the inaccuracies of other writers' work, Bramson also makes mistakes. He cites a letter he was given that was written in February 1913 which was a response to an expression of sympathy following Henry Flagler's death--which didn't occur until May 1913.There are also a number of unanswered questions raised by the author's approach. For example, the book details why the Keys route was selected over another path through the Everglades, but why was it necessary to build a railroad to Key West in the first place? Bramson discusses the importance of the FEC emblem after the extension was built, but why is it nearly impossible to find an example of that logo in the book? The tragic death of World War I veterans in the Labor Day hurricane is mentioned, but why were there so many of them working on the railroad at that time, long after its completion? And why was the extension not rebuilt following the hurricane?I'm hopeful that, given his resources, one day Bramson will write not only the true authoritative history of the Key West Extension, but also a true "story" that is both entertaining and complete.

Tells the detailed story of the construction and operation of railroading in the Florida Keys. Pretty comprehensive with lots of detail and interesting pictures, but the narrative does not flow easily or well.

A very difficult read. Each page is littered with references to other sources or works by other authors. The continuity of a story is not there.

Excellent coverage for the FEC railroad's Key West extension.

Very accurate information with references. It covers places where I have been without knowing they were once major railway installations.

Excellent history of a grand feat of construction and sad destruction. A great read for South Floridians of all ages.
