Tuttle is a professor at my school, and I took his course on polymer composites. If you are taking ME450 with him at UW, think of this book as a big coursepack. His lectures correlate to the textbook sections in the same exact order, so bringing it to class and writing extra notes in the margins ended up being a lot better than writing your own notes. This is extremely helpful because a lot of these matrices are huge, and writing them out by hand is a waste of time. The book itself is very good at explaining concepts. Even as he expands on topics from earlier chapters, you are reminded of what you have seen so far, which makes it hard to get lost. The examples are helpful, and doing the problems at the end of the chapter becomes a lot easier if you download the matrix solving programs.

Countless errors. Has caused me much more trouble than any benefit. Matrices are missing whole sections, plots are mislabeled. Very difficult to scroll through and go back and forth to the tables and equations needed. You can't copy and paste, so when it refers to the website for the programs needed you have to type it all out. Not worth it. I ended up buying a hard copy to study for the final. Fed up.

I used this book for the author's class. It was a complete privilege to take his class. This book exactly shows his educational and professional expertise in mechanics of composite material. Half of the book talks about basic mechanics and material properties of composite material including failure theory and the other half deals with analysis of composite structures such as composite beam and plate based on the classic lamination theory. The detailed examples and solutions to them were really helpful in understanding concept. I highly recommend this book for graduate students who begin studying mechanics of composite material.

I was expecting more actual examples. Too many derivations, those can be found in many other Structural books.

I used this book for a class and it works well. It's an excellent book for a composites engineer. It is written from the viewpoint of knowing the lamina properties, and applying that to design with not too much on the microscopic scale side.

I have had several graduate courses that require books on mechanics of composite materials and plate analysis. This one is by far the most organized and complete.

Review

"You’ll read this memoir from the former Guns N’ Roses bass player for the sex, drugs, and rock and roll, but you’ll remember it for what comes after—recovery, family, and fulfillment.” (Los Angeles Magazine)“In a book that mourns friendships and talent lost to drugs, his transformation is a relief and an inspiration. McKagan writes with honesty and even humility, seemingly refreshingly devoid of rock star egomania.” (Shelf Awareness)“Honest, well-written…McKagan is surprisingly self-aware and candid, and he doesn’t let himself off the hook easily.” (Publishers Weekly)“In his solid debut, the author…proves himself to be a legit writer.…McKagan has a nice eye for details and a surprisingly good memory. He’s proudly raw and harsh, refusing to hold back in terms of language and content…fans will be thrilled by this honest, detailed memoir." (Kirkus Reviews)“Fans will love the descriptions of the struggles and early triumphs of GNR, but McKagan's descriptions of his equally driven efforts at self-transformation are just as compelling (particularly his meditation on the redemptive power of reading and the satisfaction he receives in his intellectual as well as physical revitalization). Verdict: Rock fans—and would-be rockers—will find much to savor here. McKagan has packed a lot into his life and a lot of his life into this book. Readers will enjoy the ride.” (Library Journal)“McKagan recounts his (tale) with flamboyance and an engaging wit.” (Booklist)

I've been on a rockstar bio kick for a couple of months now and have read several of them. Duff's book is interesting but I hate to say somewhat formulaic and very self-consciously written.... It's almost as if he is keenly aware of the conventions of the 'bio genre' and tries very hard to stick to them. Every life changing moment has to come with an epiphany of some sort. "Once I saw my kid after they were born, everything changed instantly"....."I went back to college to study finance and now suddenly I'm a financial wizard"......etc...There are a lot of motivational speaking type quips about pushing yourself to the limit through fitness and it gets very very repetitive...For the last 100 pages or so, it's as if nothing new happens in his life.....His time in Velvet Revolver (which briefly highlights Scott Weiland's destructive tendencies through Duff's sober eyes) gets quickly glossed over....And then it suddenly all ends and of course with a positive, uplifting finale. Surprisingly, there was not much new information on the inner workings of Guns N Roses either which is disappointing but somewhat telling. It was a fast, quick rollercoaster ride and many of participants didn't have time to reflect on what was happening to them until it was over. I thought that Slash's book covered their most creative and turbulent period much better and seemed much more raw, honest and streetwise. The most interesting part of Duff's bio is definitely when he talks about his panic attacks and how he believes that it is rooted in witnessing his father's infidelities as a child. This is when he is at his most exposed and most vulnerable, but again, he quickly pulls back and sugar coats it all. He writes that he 'forgave his dad and moved on'. I wish that he had explored this period of his life much more deeply than he did. Perhaps the pain and the shame of this period runs too deep? Who knows. Only Duff knows I guess.Much stronger biographies that I read of late are Keith Richard's Life (excellent), Paul Stanley's A Life Exposed (great when Paul talks about coming to terms with his ear deformity much later after he had achieved everything that he wanted to in life), Lemmy's White Line Fever (unapologetic, raw and bare bones...much like the man and his music) and Mike Oldfield's Changeling (probably the best written, most psychologically complex and most enlightening biography written by a musician that I have read in a long time). We naturally gravitate towards reading about musicians because we want to know what makes them tick and understand why they make the decisions that they do. As much as I wanted to like it, this bio seemed to be safe and in the end strictly written by the numbers. Duff btw comes across as a much more interesting person when he is being interviewed about his life than when he is writing. He may be trying too hard to be a wordsmith now, what with all of the books and the newspaper column that he has been releasing lately....

I suppose I could wait until I'm done with the book to write this review, but I'm halfway through and I think I've got a good grasp of the book. This book is fantastic. It would be interesting for someone who isn't even a GN'R fan because it is written so well from Duff's perspective and the feeling's he experienced along the way, from growing up in Seattle to his moving to L.A. and eventually forming GN'R. You root for him, you feel empathy for him, you care about him.I'm at the point where the band is just starting to fall apart, and I can't wait to read this insider account. I fell in love with GN'R when I was 12. My dad flipped out when he saw them on MTV and I knew all of their names. This was not appropriate for a 12 year old Jehovah's Witness! He cancelled MTV. lol But my friend had given me the tape and I made a copy and I labeled it something other than GN'R. (I quit being a JW a few years later and my taste in music grew even harder). I remember reading the rumors and hearing the news about AXL not performing well, or not performing whole sets, or not performing at all. Like I said, I'm looking forward to this current section in the book for the behind the scenes perspective. Also, I recommend the Documentary on Netflix of the same title with Duff reading portions of the book to an acoustic backing by his current band, Loaded, of GN'R songs and songs from Velvet Revolver. It's accompanied by apt animations and interviews with Slash, Matt Sorum, etc. I saw the Doc first, then rewatched it, then ordered the book! You will not regret buying this book, whether you're a GN'R fan, a fan of rock bands and how they form and get signed and the journeys they go on, or a fan of autobiographies that are well written and extremely interesting.

I thought that Duff did a good job of covering the main points of the band's history. You get to see GNR go from living and rehearsing in a self storage space to the decadence of the Use your Illusion days, all the way to the breakup. In the same way, he did a good job of telling about his life from childhood, his days living in squalor trying to get a band together, and the transformation he made into a sober, married father of 2 daughters. However, I just wish he would go into detail about certain things more. It seems like he's so used to crazy things going on around him that it just isn't a big deal to him, so it's those very things that he tends to skim over. 'Yeah, well, Axl trashed the rehearsal space, and got into a fight with a girl we befriended...', and then when it comes to the completely mundane, like parenting and his battle with drugs, he seems to go on about it forever. As a result, I didn't think the book was as interesting as it could have been, but I like how he shed a good and honest light on all his former members, and didn't engage in any bitterness. He was very objective, and comes across as an honest, humble, very determined person. Although there's some bulk I would take out of this book, it's worth it to get it just to see GNR hitchhiking to gigs, or eating raw onions stranded out in a field. And most importantly, to see what happened with the band from one of the member's point of view.

From Publishers Weekly

Published in Hebrew more than 30 years ago by one of the previous century's most exceptional and revered Jewish thinkers, the long-awaited English translation of this brilliant philosophical essay on the nature of the relationship between man and God is an eloquent and intelligent effort. With an instructive introduction by scholars David Shatz and Reuven Ziegler, the translation remains loyal to the rabbi-author's melodious and meticulous style and makes this important work accessible to the English-speaking world. The essay draws upon the passionate imagery in the Song of Songs in which two lovers, long understood by Jewish commentators to refer to the love between God and the Jewish people, yearn and search for one another only to be thwarted at the last possible moment from their ultimate reunion by a curious withdrawal. Soloveitchik analyzes with genius this contradictory response in terms of the religious and philosophical nature of love and awe, mercy and justice, prophecy and related emotions and states of being. This cogent and rarified essay, like Soloveitchik's earlier work Halakhic Man, is certain to become indispensable to devotees and scholars of the man known to many as the Rav. (Apr.) About the Author

Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik (1903-1993) was not only one of the outstanding talmudists of the twentieth century, but also one of its most creative and seminal Jewish thinkers. Drawing from a vast reservoir of Jewish and general knowledge, the Rav, as he is widely known, brought Jewish thought and law to bear on the interpretation and assessment of the modern experience. For over four decades, Rabbi Soloveitchik commuted weekly from his home in Brookline, Massachusetts to New York City, where he gave the senior shiur (class in Talmud) at Yeshiva University s affiliated Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary (RIETS), where he taught and inspired generations of students, among them many of the future leaders of the Orthodox and broader Jewish community. By his extensive personal teaching and influence, he contributed vitally to the dynamic resurgence of Orthodox Judaism in America.

#608,178 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

This is the tenth volume published after Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik's death (1903-1993). Most of these posthumous books are based on writings he did not publish; however this volume is an English translation of the rabbi's Hebrew 1978 classic "U-Vikkashtem Mi Sham." The authors of its introduction say that one cannot understand his worldview "without taking account and grappling with this rich and complex work."The book has twenty chapters and is 150 pages long. It also has fifty pages of notes, some of which are small essays. It is not a psychological study of people, but a homiletical treatise, a series of sermons, expositions on biblical verses. If Jewish philosophy starts with certain ideas, such as the teachings of Aristotle, as Maimonides did, and then using biblical verses to support them, while theology begins with biblical verses and tries to deduce ideas from them, Rabbi Soloveitchik's books are theology. He uses the Bible's Song of Songs to describe people's search for God. People retreat from God at the moment of a potential encounter. They experience a to-and-fro with God, sometimes almost feeling an encounter and then losing it. Thus "man" - and by man, the rabbi includes non-Jews throughout this book, except when he specifically speaks of Jews - cannot know God, only the world God created. He agrees with Maimonides who taught that people have an obligation to "know God by knowing His works - the works of creation" (page 41). But he insists that this is not enough. Man must "fulfill God's will unconditionally."People have two forms of knowledge, the "natural" and "revelation." They can find God through what they see, hear, smell, taste, and feel; this is the natural way. Revelation is the insight people gain when they understand nature. Religion - indeed life generally - requires both.Revelation did not end. It gives rabbis the freedom to create new interpretations. Revelation's purpose is "not in order to take (humans) out of this world, but to reform and elevate it" (123). "The goal of halakhic inquiry is to hew out new ideas and fresh, surprising conceptions" from ancient laws (109). "The Holy One, Blessed Be He, gave the Torah to Israel and commanded us to innovate and create" (110). "Intellect is the final arbiter in all matters of law and judgment (107)."Rabbi Soloveitchik's idea of revelation leads him to his concept of religion. Humans begin their search for God with a thirst for freedom, a desire for liberation from tyrannical nature and the travail of life. But "revelational religion lusts for unrestricted control." God is a stern and terrifying judge, a punisher who demands the sacrifice of self. The goal of religion is "utter subordination," submitting entirely to God, abandoning one's will, "unlimited discipline"; a religious person "accepts the (divine) commandments against his will." He chooses to obey God out of recognition of his greatness. His subjugation is his freedom; "he feels the complete tranquility of the slave who does his master's bidding" (150). The willingness of Isaac to be bound and sacrificed to God by his father Abraham is the religious paradigm for Rabbi Soloveitchik. But this does not mean that people should abandon from social life. The prophet Jeremiah taught in 9:23, God wants a person who "exercises loving-kindness, justice, and righteousness on the earth." The Torah does not forbid people from indulging in pleasure as long as they do so in moderation. It criticizes those who avoid pleasure. Judaism's this-worldly emphasis is seen in its teaching that miracles occur only when it is absolutely necessary, for Judaism extols the natural order (133). "Man worships his Creator with his body, his eating, and his sexual activity, and this worship is preferable to worship through prayer" (115).Agree or not with Rabbi Soloveitchik's teachings that knowledge is important but subordinate to revelation, revelation still exists in the insights people achieve when they study nature, the scarcity of miracles, humanity's obligation to enjoy life, and enslavement to God and his laws, this book introduces readers to the thinking of a prominent rabbi and prompts them to think about these subjects and use their conclusions to improve themselves and society.
