Review

"Even readers who wouldn’t know a marvellous spatuletail from a southern ground hornbill will be awed by Strycker’s achievement and appreciate the passion with which he pursues his interest." —Publishers Weekly  "Strycker's description of a year ‘expanded to its maximum potential’ will inspire readers to explore the world, ‘from the tiniest detail to the biggest panorama.’ . . . Colorful but unassuming—and unexpected—lessons for living life fully, presented from a birder's-eye view."—STARRED, Kirkus Reviews "Every generation has a few naturalist-writers who have a spirit as unlimited as their talent—that’s Noah Strycker. The sheer demographics of his travels are mind boggling; he stretches life to the limits, and he has an ability to describe incidents of travel, landscapes, and people with splendid and self-deprecating intimacy. This book goes to the top of my life-list.”—Howard Norman, author of My Darling Detective   "Noah Strycker is a fantastic birder, savvy traveler, and astute observer. Best of all, though, he is a fine writer. I really enjoyed this book.”—Mark Obmascik, author of The Big Year: A Tale of Man, Nature, and Fowl Obsession   "Noah Strycker's ark is big enough for six thousand birds—and then some!—but just as impressive is the way this gifted gatherer makes room for wonder, joy, and friendship found in far-flung places. This is one of those rare, beautiful books that enlarges the world with adventure and makes it feel, at the same time, like a mysteriously intimate place, inhabited by good people in love with the natural world willing to help a stranger on his extraordinary journey."—Jonathan Rosen author of The Life of the Skies: Birding at the end of Nature   "Birding Without Borders is an absolute tour de force. Every birder knows the day-dream lure of exotic species from far-away places, but Noah Stryker turned that dream into the greatest birding adventure of all time. The story of his round-the-world Big Year is one of joy, adrenaline, exhaustion, discovery, and a global fellowship of those for whom, like Noah, birds are everything.  I guarantee it will make you want to grab your binoculars and your passport, too.”—Scott Weidensaul, author of Living on the Wind   "What an astonishing peregrination. If by chance you can't meet these 6,042 species yourself, this book is a close second. Strycker is the perfect companion—smart, thoughtful, intrepid, and at times, very very funny. I loved the birds and the people he met and was sorry when his journey was over."—Jennifer Ackerman, author of The Genius of Birds    "Birding without Borders is about bird nerdery taken to a magnificent, even beautiful extreme. Noah Strycker goes from country to country seeking out five thousand species of birds, and that quest is an adventure in itself. Armchair birders like myself, watching a Pygmy Nuthatch watching me, can appreciate the passion and courage that Noah displays."—Craig Newmark, founder of Craigslist

I'm going to start this out as "opportunity missed". I read a lot of natural history, and I appreciate stories of individuals who have had their own adventures in the natural world. This book is about a global big year of birding. The author Noah Strycker did just that. The book recalls his journey, several of the birds he saw (I won't note the amount as that is part of the story), some of the birding guides he encountered along the way, a few misadventures, and then a list of the birds at the end and some of the gear he brought. That is all well and good.To begin the STORY portion of the book is really quite short; 258 pages. So while there is some good material here it is just too short for the journey he took. In the book he skips several locations he visited deemed (I guess) uninteresting; that was a mistake in my mind. But more so what was REALLY missing was more of his subjects, the birds themselves in the context he was viewing them. Granted some of the truly rare birds are included and occasionally some really good adventures and descriptions built in (I think Peru was especially so) I was disappointed how infrequently he did that. This could have been a MUCH better book; much more interesting anyway if he had done more of that kind of writing. Maybe something more like "The Log from the Sea of Cortez". So, as a naturalist I found myself wanting. Competitive birders will likely satisfy themselves with the list, maybe dreaming how they can beat his numbers. He made it clear this was a personal journey though and I feel if there more of his connection to his subjects that this would have been a fantastic book. I'm probably being harsher than I should, it is a good read, I was just expecting so much more.I'll finally add, that a book of this type has the potential to link through the ages, a year from now, ten years, a hundred and beyond. If he had been more explicit about his journey it is something that could be replicated and compared to is adventure (can you tell I'm a scientist?) Because he is doing his upmost to protect subjects he is often vague, understandable I suppose, but reduces the value of it potential contribution to ornithology.

Birding Without Borders is one of the best books written about birding. I can say this with some authority because I have read most of the other books in this genre, including Kenn Kaufman’s Kingbird Highway, and Phoebe Snetsinger’s Birding on Borrowed Time.In 2015, Noah Stryker set out to set the record for the most birds seen worldwide in the course of a calendar year. The previous record of 4341 had been set by a British couple Ruth Miller and Alan Davies in 2008. Noah not only broke this record but also crossed the 5,000 bird mark and then the 6,000 mark by the end of his journey. Noah, who has been writing about birds since he was a teenager for a variety of publications, made the trip out of a love for birds. His admiration for avian life and the natural world illuminates every page. Unlike many other big listers, Noah set out upon his journey to see iconic birds, and not just little brown jobs good for a tick. He travelled to Antarctica to see Penguins, the heart of the Pantanal to see the magnificent Harpy Eagle, and to a forgotten patch of Papua New Guinea to see a rare Golden Masked Owl. He survived illness, a car crash, and numerous missed connections. Through it all, he chronicles an excellent adventure through some of the world’s most remote landscapes. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in birdwatching, travel, or ecology.

I really liked Noah's book on his Big Year. It was very enjoyable to read about the chases as he moved around the planet. He not only writes about the birds but also the people and some of his more trying times (like when he was sick). He had a lot of great help AND fun by his "assistants" and that has made for a read hard to put down. The photos are excellent. Well done. Nice chronology too. Noah is a skilled and talented writer and I hope he continues to write about his adventures AND conservation with it's many issues. It's high time he tackle the Climate Change matter with urgency. There are some small brained people in leadership positions in this country who need serious & immediate readjustment and Noah, you have the skill and ability to do that. Get to it please. Important laws for birds and other wildlife are under attack and you have a great platform to keep those protections in place. Your book with its international theme can open a lot of eyes to the simple threat of future attempts to do what you did as no longer achievable because of the rapid possibility of many avian species becoming extinct (Philippine Eagle & Spoon-billed Sandpiper), disappearing before the next world birder gets to see them. Hopefully that won't happen, but that's a big hope. Thanks for a great set of stories that's just been a delight to read.

I am enjoying every minute of this adventure. Almost fell like I"m travelling with him.

I loved this book. What's not to like? A man travels around the world to all sorts of exotic places, he encounters interesting characters, he has exploits, and he's following his dream. Unfortunately, if you're not a birder like me, you won't be too interested in this book.Noah Strycker sets out to see 5000 bird species in one year. It's what birders call "A Big Year". Strycker writes about his preparations and his travels in a competent, blogerly fashion. As he travels, he does rattle off all the birds he's seeing at each place as if everyone is familiar with them. But if, like me, you're only familiar with North American birds, you spend a lot of time Googling to see all the birds he names. That was frustrating. As much as I enjoyed Strycker's travels and envied his birding exploits, this is a "For Birders Only" book.

In 1858, Abraham Lincoln attempted to persaude the Illinois' State Assembly to select him to the United States Senate over the incumbent and powerful Steven A. Douglas by engaging Douglas in seven open air debates. The fact that Douglas agreed to these debates is somewhat of a mystery since he was already well-known and well-admired in Illinois. Giving Lincoln a forum in which was on the same stage a Douglas would likely enhance Lincoln's political stature but would not necessarily benefit Douglas. Nonetheless, Douglas agreed to seven debates and each was dramatic. The theme central to all seven was the issue of slavery and whether the Federal government should ban it, limit it or stay out of the issue and let the states themselves decide. Neither pursauded the other but Douglas, a pro-slavery advocate, apparently did enough to get elected by the Illinois State Assembly (US Senators at that time were still elected by their respective State Legislators). Lincoln, however, made the case, repeatedly for Man's inalienable, God given right to be free. Lincoln's message, as history demonstrated, eventually carried the day with his Party and the American electorate. His message rings true today.

This is absolutely great. The listener needs a little history background which may be lacking from the current government schools. Compare the delivery and language to what were essentially "country rubes" to today's excuse for debates. No fifteen second sound bites or two minute responses. I have a third grade reader from the early 20th century and the contrast with current expectations is striking. The dramatic reading and background information flesh this out nicely. It is as if you are present. Love it.

This 14 disc set includes the texts as transcribed by newspaper reporters, with introductions and occasional interjections by the audience. Allen Guelzo, who introduces the debates, does not sound like a college professor who happened to write a very fine book on the debates, but as another professionally trained voice. His spoken introduction is valuable for setting the context, but his book Lincoln and Douglas: The Debates that Defined America (Simon & Schuster Lincoln Library) is even better. A little reading ahead of time will help you with the Lecompton constitution, Douglas and Buchanan's conflicted relationship, and Lincoln's reading of the combined effects of Dred Scott and the Fugitive Slave Law.Richard Dreyfuss gives Judge Douglas a fair reading and then some. In the later debates, under the stress of travel and frequent speaking and the shock of seeing how effective Lincoln's rhetoric had been, Douglas took to the bottle. Eyewitness accounts report slurred speech and mumbled references to his opponent as "Misha Linka." Here, Dreyfuss is clear and persuasive in each debate. He makes sure you know the overriding importance of popular sovereignty as a way of settling regional political disputes.David Strathairn is a superb actor, but here his tendency to swallow the last syllable or two of each line is distracting, and hence my reason for 4 rather than 5 stars. Otherwise, his Lincoln is the epitome of Midwestern common sense, and like Lincoln himself, his speech takes on more power as we enter the decisive sixth and seventh debates at Quincy and Alton.Their discussions about "Negro equality" often sound like fingernails on a chalkboard to a 21st century listener. But when Lincoln finally moves the plane of discussion to the question of slavery's moral status, rather than just one more policy issue the people are entitled to decide through their representatives, you can see how Lincoln came to appeal to so many in the North beyond the hearing range of these debates in Illinois.

The content of the debates is a 5.This rendition however, is a 2. A simple run through a grammar and spell check would have caught the numerous, and I do mean numerous errors contained in this book. It is distracting at times and a slight to such an historical series of debates. If the publisher of this book cares about the content, they should clean it up. Heck they could contact me and I'd be happy to help.

I enjoyed reading through these debates immensely. So much so that I completed them in one sitting, which is a rare occurrence considering the books length. I've only recent begun to have a rather intense interest in President Lincoln, and believe these debates (even if you only read the edited ones) are fundamental to getting to know the man as a politician and how he reasoned. Even though these are said to be the most "base" versions of the debates, considering they are accounts given by the opposition, i found them intellectually challenging and overall stimulating. Many of the issues they cover are still being debated, even if we've changed the way we argue. I highly suggest these to any history buffs, and especially any who are attempting to study Lincoln himself.

I applaud this effort. This is really fine, but I do think that Lincoln's high squeeking voice, and Douglas' developed slurring, would have added to the sensation of having actually been there. And the frequent crowd comments (actually recorded by the rival stenographers), could have been added by other actors, instead of a narrator. And a few minutes of scene-setting by a narrator, about the weather, the location, the preparations of the site, and any pertinent information about the audience, would have been appreciated.Again, though, I really do applaud this effort!

Purchased this book as I was preparing to portray Senator Douglas in a debate re-enactment. I found it fascinating and very useful. Using the versions of each debate that were likely the least 'doctored' greatly increased the historical accuracy. I also found the background information that was presented with each debate to be well written and entertaining as well as informative. I have other versions of the Lincoln - Douglas debates but this is by far the best. I highly recommend this book.

While I do have a couple tiny issues with some of Donovan's thought processes and definitions, overall this was a thoroughly entertaining, even riveting story of the fall of Satan and his minions. Of course, we won't know what happened until we get to heaven, this was an excellent theory. One issue, which weaved itself thru the entire story, thus pulling me out of the action time and again, is his definition and use of the word Elohim. This word is traditionally the plural of El, meaning the Trinity, Father, Son, and. Holy Spirit (or Holy Ghost).Other "issues" were small and far between.I truly enjoyed the Heaven that Donovan built for us, and the story about how Eden was created and given away. So many great things I could say, but they would give away the story for you to read.I definitely recommend this be added to your reading list if you have any interest in angels, demons, heaven and how things might have gone down to put us as God's children created in His image, and the angels as servants to us.Amazing imagination, Donovan. Kudos. And on to book two. ------>

This book gives the reader a different perspective of the fall of Lucifer, which I like. However, the writer writes like how the bible is written, and I don't like reading like that because it is hard to understand certain things. The author even has a glossary in the back of book with definitions of the words he uses, which takes away some of the enjoyment for me. There is also a glossary describing all the different varieties of angels, and there are quite a few. The angels have different ranks, they look different, serve God differently, it is hard to keep them straight. The author has put a lot of thought into these books, but it is a difficult read for me.

I loved the way he quoted from the Bible as so many verses can have meaning for more than one time. I loved the new ideas as to how this could have happened and the timeline for angels falling. It might not be true, but the ideas make sense, which in turn makes the Bible seem more understandable. It's easy to see how Lucifer, thinking so highly of himself, thought too highly, and made mistaken assumptions. I loved the question asked of him..." What shall I do to the one I wish to honor?" And from there it makes sense that he thought he was made for more than servitude. It might be fiction, but the motives applied seem so reasonable. It was full of creative ideas and action. In fact it was a bit too much violence for me that went on and on. I was frustrated with some words that I had to look up in the Kindle dictionary and then find they weren't there. A few sentences didn't make sense. And it was hard too keep up with the meaning of all the new words and remembering who was what. But I enjoyed the book and got the ideas and enjoyed the cleverness of it.

I found this book to be one of those that at times, you wonder why you're reading it as it seems to go against the grain. It does grab you and keeps you reading to see where the author is taking you. It is fantasy more than biblical, though there is a bit of allegory if you can catch it...reminiscent of Tolkein. There are error, but not horrifically distracting. It is very violent, as I suppose the fall and battles with Satan would be, and still are, I imagine. The author did well in character development and in the gradual change of Lucifer into the diabolical creature he became. The depiction of the Father and Creator of all was my main disappointment, but how can one portray Him anyway, so all encompassing is He. He was made more man-like, rather than God-like and divine (the bible does say there is no one like Him). I also did not agree with the angels being depicted as, well, basically men, but it made for a good story that way. I will not go into this, but the author did not do well in this area. He did though, get across a bit of the love of God for his creation; angels and man. I read both books, this as well as the Birth of God, so the author did accomplish that. For those not rooted in a relationship with God, many would like this book. For Christians, some may be offended, but it is truly one person's imagination and vision of what could have been, and only that...not a biblical story. He certainly has an imagination that verges on science fiction. He keeps one interested despite all the grammatical problems, misspellings and typos. I will read the next one, but another step and the author could go too far for me.

This is an intricate story that deals with and age old issue- Good and Evil. Will Good or Evil be the victor? The answer is one still being written even though based on what we see around us....Evil seems to be on top.The imagery is vivid and clear. I love the scenes that can be envisioned from reading within these pages. The length deception and lies is deep. Murmur is one of the bad guys and well named and descriptive of the imagery one the word holds. It was page turner I really enjoyed.I was very impressed with this story written by Mr. Neal. Yes, I am a Christian and a believer in the one true and Living God. Much of this story has a direct correlation to passages in the Bible. Lucifer was written about just as the story depicts him, Even many of the characters have been written about Michael, Gabriel, Lucifer and others. Coincidentally, many of the characters who play an intricate part have names associated with names that have and evil. This book can and does cause one to think about what went into the world before Darwinism was even conceived in mind of the man.Look forward to reading more of this saga...

This author portrays that traitor to the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob as a sympathetic creature, and blasphemously dares to say that the Creator of the universe was going to make that fallen angel a fourth member of the Trinity. As Jude said in verse 10 (KJV) "But these speak evil of those things which they know not; but what they know naturally, as brute beasts, in those things they corrupt themselves." And I say to the author what the archangel Michael said to the devil when contending with him about the body of Moses (Jude verse 9 KJV), "The Lord rebuke thee."

I just love Loretta Lynn. Honestly, I never listened to much of her music. Heard it on the radio from time to time, but in my youth, rock 'n roll was what I listened to. I loved the movie Coal Miner's Daughter. I saw her on a show with the medium Kim Russo a couple years ago. She was checking out her haunted house and I just fell in love with Loretta Lynn. There's something about her that is indescribably appealing. This book is just wonderful. It's written in the colloquial voice and it works. It's like she's sitting across from you telling you her life story, and what a story it is. She is an amazing person. This is simply a great memoir, whether you are into her music or not.

Everybody who saw the movie and wondered how the little girl who read movie magazines while waiting for her husband to come home became a busy mother of four, seemingly overnight, should read this book to find out what was missing from the movie. We know Loretta can write song lyrics. But that's not all she can write. Hint: this girl is a writer. Read this book. I wanted to read the new one, STILL WOMAN ENOUGH, but it's not available on Kindle yet.

I read this book many years ago then watched the movie a few weeks ago and it made me want to read the book again! So I bought this book, reread it and made me want to go to Butcher Holler - especially since I found out that we had been to Paintsville KY for hubby’s work - which she mentions this town and I couldn’t believe I had been just 10 minutes away from her birth place! Now I am definitely going to go visit there when the weather gets better. This is probably one of my favorite autobiographies and Loretta Lynn is one of the best female country singers ever!

Omg I love her and really enjoy her book and hearing it the way it was.she is an amazing lady.my grandma grew up down the hill from her,she seen her at the store a couple of times lol said Loretta was so pretty.my grandma was just like her and went through a lot also.she would share stories of her time growing up there it was a very hard time but people was honest caring people.well anyway can’t wait to get the next book❤️💕

This book lived up to my high expectations! Love Loretta and was eager to read this book. Written just the way she talks and sings. You felt like Loretta was a good friend by the end of it, as she shares personal stories, some sweet, some hard to share, I'm sure. Recommend it to any person who appreciates music or southern stories.

Who doesnt love Loretta? She is what she is. Wondered about the Crystal Gayle situation before. She is so different from Loretta, you can't tell they are related unless someone tells you. They did a good job distinguishing themselves from one another so their careers would thrive.

Loretta is very candid, down to earth and doesn't pretend to be someone she is not. Some things I knew, some I didn't, but was wishing it was longer, cuz I never get enough Loretta. Looking forward to meeting her one day!

I could not put it down. I have always loved Loretta Lynn . I can remember going to the grand ole Opry with my grandparents when I was 4 I have listened to her music all my life even seen Cole minners daughter to many times to count . Love that movie . But this book was amazing it is just her . Thank you Miss Lynn your an inspiration . Love and happiness always . Brandy Lynn King
