In 1858, Abraham Lincoln attempted to persaude the Illinois' State Assembly to select him to the United States Senate over the incumbent and powerful Steven A. Douglas by engaging Douglas in seven open air debates. The fact that Douglas agreed to these debates is somewhat of a mystery since he was already well-known and well-admired in Illinois. Giving Lincoln a forum in which was on the same stage a Douglas would likely enhance Lincoln's political stature but would not necessarily benefit Douglas. Nonetheless, Douglas agreed to seven debates and each was dramatic. The theme central to all seven was the issue of slavery and whether the Federal government should ban it, limit it or stay out of the issue and let the states themselves decide. Neither pursauded the other but Douglas, a pro-slavery advocate, apparently did enough to get elected by the Illinois State Assembly (US Senators at that time were still elected by their respective State Legislators). Lincoln, however, made the case, repeatedly for Man's inalienable, God given right to be free. Lincoln's message, as history demonstrated, eventually carried the day with his Party and the American electorate. His message rings true today.
This is absolutely great. The listener needs a little history background which may be lacking from the current government schools. Compare the delivery and language to what were essentially "country rubes" to today's excuse for debates. No fifteen second sound bites or two minute responses. I have a third grade reader from the early 20th century and the contrast with current expectations is striking. The dramatic reading and background information flesh this out nicely. It is as if you are present. Love it.
This 14 disc set includes the texts as transcribed by newspaper reporters, with introductions and occasional interjections by the audience. Allen Guelzo, who introduces the debates, does not sound like a college professor who happened to write a very fine book on the debates, but as another professionally trained voice. His spoken introduction is valuable for setting the context, but his book Lincoln and Douglas: The Debates that Defined America (Simon & Schuster Lincoln Library) is even better. A little reading ahead of time will help you with the Lecompton constitution, Douglas and Buchanan's conflicted relationship, and Lincoln's reading of the combined effects of Dred Scott and the Fugitive Slave Law.Richard Dreyfuss gives Judge Douglas a fair reading and then some. In the later debates, under the stress of travel and frequent speaking and the shock of seeing how effective Lincoln's rhetoric had been, Douglas took to the bottle. Eyewitness accounts report slurred speech and mumbled references to his opponent as "Misha Linka." Here, Dreyfuss is clear and persuasive in each debate. He makes sure you know the overriding importance of popular sovereignty as a way of settling regional political disputes.David Strathairn is a superb actor, but here his tendency to swallow the last syllable or two of each line is distracting, and hence my reason for 4 rather than 5 stars. Otherwise, his Lincoln is the epitome of Midwestern common sense, and like Lincoln himself, his speech takes on more power as we enter the decisive sixth and seventh debates at Quincy and Alton.Their discussions about "Negro equality" often sound like fingernails on a chalkboard to a 21st century listener. But when Lincoln finally moves the plane of discussion to the question of slavery's moral status, rather than just one more policy issue the people are entitled to decide through their representatives, you can see how Lincoln came to appeal to so many in the North beyond the hearing range of these debates in Illinois.
The content of the debates is a 5.This rendition however, is a 2. A simple run through a grammar and spell check would have caught the numerous, and I do mean numerous errors contained in this book. It is distracting at times and a slight to such an historical series of debates. If the publisher of this book cares about the content, they should clean it up. Heck they could contact me and I'd be happy to help.
I enjoyed reading through these debates immensely. So much so that I completed them in one sitting, which is a rare occurrence considering the books length. I've only recent begun to have a rather intense interest in President Lincoln, and believe these debates (even if you only read the edited ones) are fundamental to getting to know the man as a politician and how he reasoned. Even though these are said to be the most "base" versions of the debates, considering they are accounts given by the opposition, i found them intellectually challenging and overall stimulating. Many of the issues they cover are still being debated, even if we've changed the way we argue. I highly suggest these to any history buffs, and especially any who are attempting to study Lincoln himself.
I applaud this effort. This is really fine, but I do think that Lincoln's high squeeking voice, and Douglas' developed slurring, would have added to the sensation of having actually been there. And the frequent crowd comments (actually recorded by the rival stenographers), could have been added by other actors, instead of a narrator. And a few minutes of scene-setting by a narrator, about the weather, the location, the preparations of the site, and any pertinent information about the audience, would have been appreciated.Again, though, I really do applaud this effort!
Purchased this book as I was preparing to portray Senator Douglas in a debate re-enactment. I found it fascinating and very useful. Using the versions of each debate that were likely the least 'doctored' greatly increased the historical accuracy. I also found the background information that was presented with each debate to be well written and entertaining as well as informative. I have other versions of the Lincoln - Douglas debates but this is by far the best. I highly recommend this book.
