At first the point of view was a bit off-putting, but after a few chapters in I hardly noticed it. Despite the length of this novel, I could scarcely put it down. It takes you on a thrill ride of epic proportions; from outright horror to something magical, pure and uplifting. The chemistry of the two incredible writers would seemingly have been nigh impossible to top after The Talisman, yet they brought the magic back with Black House. In spades.

I read the Talisman years ago and re-read it prior to reading this. As with other readers of Black House, I found the first several pages difficult, at times painful to get through. I would actually close my Kindle cover, squeeze my eyes shut, painfully re-open them, knock on the Kindle and say, "Story, you can come out now. I know you're in there somewhere. Please stop torturing me with the mindless tour and bizarre narration." It finally did. I skimmed through the first part and was rewarded. The majority of the book was great and worth getting through the mindless tour and bizarre narration at the beginning.

Black House is the second of two novels by Stephen King & Peter Straub. As far as I know, there are no others in this series. I was afraid it would either be too scary or somehow boring – I seem to have read a lot of Stephen King books over the years and thought I might be getting to the point where they all started to be somewhat the same. But even though there were some unpleasant aspects to it, it was a very interesting story. For understanding this book, I’m sure it helps if you have read the first book, The Talisman, but if you haven’t, it won’t keep you from enjoying this one. The book refers back to the earlier one several times, but the story stands well on its own. It also references places and events from Stephen King's Dark Tower series and having read those also helps to understand this one. But again, it is not necessary. The story begins with an overview of the little town of French Landing, Wisconsin. One of the things we find out during our tour of the town is that it has been plagued by a string of murders of children. The police are already working on the first two cases, and there is a third they are not yet sure of. And the murderer is planning the abduction of a fourth child.Jack Sawyer, the hero of The Talisman, has retired from the LAPD and come to live in French Landing. He is good friends with Dale Gilbertson, the police chief and with Gilbertson’s uncle Henry, a blind man who has several DJ personalities for various radio stations in the area. With these helpers and some others, including a motorcycle gang, one of whose members is the father of the first of the murder victims, Jack must find the murderer and rescue the last little boy to disappear. This journey involves a mysterious Black House that belongs to the murderer and a trip to the mysterious lands that Jack thinks of as The Territories – places that will be familiar to those who have read the Dark Tower series.

An excellent follow-up to "The Talisman." The only reason I gave it four stars instead of five is that the beginning is very slow. It takes you through the town, introducing you to all the characters, some major and some minor, but because you're not invested in these characters yet, it can be a little confusing. If you stick with it, you'll come upon Jack Sawyer, our protagonist, all grown up and tired of homicide detecting. However, he has one more case to solve....

The Black House is the sequel to Steven King and Peter Straub's epic masterpiece, "The Talisman." The way these stories are written, the reader can feel the banter band camaraderie between King and Straub jumping off the in the way of descriptions and character building.Black House is not just the continuation "travelling Jack's journey in The Talisman. It is also a look into the evil that can permeate a small town and the unlikely heroes that emerge from such chaos. This a theme that makes Steven King and Peter Straub such wonderful story teller. Both are master of character development and their utilization of small and, seemingly, bucolic towns as the backdrop for the battle of good and evil is what gives gravitas to this story. The ingenuity of this book is that this time around there is no quest nor is it just about the now-grown up Jack Sawyer. Black House is as much a story of a small town entrenched in a crisis, the resolution that extends out like the branches of a tree that extends into Steven King's Dark Tower series. Once again, the characters are so well-fleshed out that I could feel deep emotions for each of them and the mysterious Tower that looms in the shadows that leaves a terrifying imagine in the readers imagination. The ending of Black House is both satisfying and tragic, leaving me to want to know what happens next.

This may have been the third time I’ve read the Talisman set by Stephen King and Peter Straub.. What an excellent configuration. They meld together perfectly and deliver a story line that is enjoyable and spellbinding no matter how many times I read it. I could go on and on about the exceptional character development, the imagery and the way the book has an atmospheric all its own. But, to be completely honest and ‘transparent’ as they say these days,... I read books of this genre solely to be entertained. If the book transforms from words to pictures in my mind’s eye, if I can imagine the characters so well that I literally care about them, and be both satisfied with the end, yet disappointed that it ended, then I am a very happy camper! Thank you Stephen King, Peter Straub and Amazon! 👍🏻 well done!

First impression after opening packaging was, "Is this it?!?". Book is pretty slim for the hefty price tag - in fact, in a word, the price is OUTRAGEOUS. 45 bucks, really?!?? We all know it's not often about "quantity over quality" (usually the contrary), but the content here really isn't all that great either. The "critical" approach is kind of odd, taking into account the subject matter. My advice is to spend what you would have on this book and search out the admittedly less broad, but much more entertaining to read & look at, books on the Skywald "Horror Mood" & Eerie Publications magazines. Those are both much more fun reads & cheaper to boot!

It makes a good wedge to keep the window open. If you are interested in only Marvel it is probably a good piece. If your interests lie in True Monster Magazines STAY AWAY!

down memory lane. A terrific overview of the classic magazines from the 1970's! Highly recommended for anyone who enjoyed the magazines at the time!

If you didn't grow up in the 60s or 70s you probably don't have a sense for just how big monster magazines were back then. The kids who grew up on these magazines were part of the culture who watched Shock Theater films hosted by those great horror movie hosts like Zacherley, Ghoulardi, Chilly Billy Cardille, and The Ghoul. This was the era of those great Aurora monster model hits as well and the monster mags of that time were like a gathering place for fans.Robert Michael Cotters book promises a critical look at monster magazines. Yes! The same magazines that our mothers hated is now getting a critical look! In a lengthy introduction, Cotter gives a history of magazine and that era that fostered them. The Shock Theater package of films and the horror hosts were really the seeds of monster magazines. Films that previously were only seen in theaters were now showing up on late night TV and kids ate them up.The grandfather of monster magazines was Warren Publishing's "Famous Monsters of Filmland" which began publishing in 1958, edited by legendary historian and collector, Forrest Ackerman. Famous Monsters, or FM as it is referred to, spawned numerous imitators. Heck, Warren Publishing even put out a few imitators of its own such as the short-lived Monster World. Cotter's book provides a history of these magazines providing the years they were published and giving details about select issues.Knowing a good thing when he saw it, Marvel Comics' Stan Lee decided to start up his own line of monster mags first with humor magazines Monsters to Laugh With and Monster Unlimited. These were no more than black & white photos from horror films with funny world balloons added. They didn't prove to be all that funny and quickly folded. Monsters of the Movies. A virtual FM clone, proved to be a bit more successful lasting 8 issues and an annual.Cotter does a nice job of covering these magazines, hitting on some of the very insignificant magazines like Mad Monsters, Movie Monsters, and Monster Mania, as well as some of the unique publications like The Monster Times, which was a newspaper format mag, England's Halls of Horror, and the mercurial Castle of Frankenstein.Cotter however greatly veers off course. He does mention in the introduction that he includes comic magazines as well and Marvel put out some great B&W horror comic magazines like Monsters Unleashed and Tales of the Zombie, but Cotter lingers far too long on Marvel's magazines. More space is afforded to the above-mentioned magazines than those that were infinitely superior, namely Warren's Creepy and Eerie, who featured some of the most talented artists of the time. Even worse, Cotter goes on to devote a great deal of space to magazines that were decidedly NOT monster mags like The Savage Sword of Conan, Heavy Metal, Planet of the Apes, Epic illustrated, and The Deadly Hands of Kung-Fu. Cotter gives an insufficient explanation for including these publications. The entire book ends up being way too Marvel-themed, especially considering their contribution to monster magazines pales next to Warren Publishing's offerings.Monster magazines are stronger than they've been in thirty years today yet Cotter manages a mere ten pages to mention the new breed likes of the long-running Midnight Marquee, the gorgeous Monsters From the Vault, or the zany Scary Monsters Magazine. The Great Monster Magazines doesn't quite provide the critical study that it claims. Truly wonderful mags are dismissed in favor of magazines that are not even true horror mags. It's a nice book for reference but falls woefully short of a true critical analysis.

If you are a fan of comics, you might find this very superficial overview interesting, but fans of monster MOVIE mags will be disappointed. Though he warns in the product description that he covers both film and comic magazines, it is not evenly divided, but very heavily weighted towards comics. When Castle of Frankenstein gets 2 and a half pages, but a Marvel monster comic mag called Monsters Unleashed gets 7, you can see the slant. Much of text taken up by lengthy lists of table-of-contents of sample issues, which is a shame because the author can write, but seems to have just padded the book with many of these table-of-content lists, with short paragraphs of actual text after each.

This book is an incredibly detailed account of the evolution of Comics, Monster Magazines, and Films during the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. It covers both well known publications such as Dracula and obscure works such as The Forever People. The collection is extremely comprehensive. This book contains a plethora of information about the development of these medias, the authors and artists, and the fan base of these publications. This book is also contains the cover art of many magazines. These priceless images capture an amazing era of Monster Magazines.

This is in regard to the whole series. I wish I could give it all the stars in the sky! If you love Critical Role, then you will love this. Matthew Colville does a spectacular job of making the members of Vox Machina (before they became Vox Machina) sound as if they had been written by the group of lovable "nerdy a$$ voice actors" themselves. I mean it reads a lot like a transcript of them playing their prestream games. I don't know how he pulls it off. Clearly he is a wizard... or perhaps the greatest lore-master bard that has ever lived! So far the story is very enthralling. The party, not yet joined (Vex and Vax are tackling this quest from one angle; Keyeth and Tibs from another; and Grog and Scanlan from yet another... I'm guessing Percy is either in a jail cell, or about to have his first dealings with the Briarwoods) are caught up on a plot if intrigue, and their stories are starting to intersect. To be honest, my only real gripe is it reads too fast. :-)Can not recommended this enough!

The eagerly anticipated "Critical Role" comic series continues with the introduction of Scanlan and Grog! Matthew Colville's writing not only brings these characters to life, but also produces some very funny comedic dialogue. If I had to make some criticisms, the panels can sometimes have too much dialogue, and it is tricky to figure out who is saying what and in what order. Also, I felt Grog didn't get as many lines, and almost all the focus was placed on Scanlan. Though I love the Gnome Bard, I would've loved to hear the classic "wisdom" of Grog Strongjaw. Regardless, it is definitely an entertaining read, and a good starting point for the fledgling dynamic between Scanlan and Grog. I can't wait for Keyleth and Tiberius in the next issue!

So great to be reading and seeing the amazing origin story of my favorite D&D Group!! Hurry with the next one!

I've got a soft spot for stories about forming a team, and so does Matt Colville. We leave behind the protagonists of issue one yup focus on the future bard and barbarian of Vox Machina aka, the smart (ass) guy and the big guy. A knowledge of D&D may help catch the many Easter eggs, but is not necessary to appreciate the dialogue and growing plot.

More characters introduced, this series is coming together and pulling me in to it. Character development is good and has the right amount of depth.

Been watching the show on Twitch, Alpha, and YouTube for a while now, and I am really enjoying this series of books with the whole back story of the characters. Keep up the Vox Machina love!!!

The chemistry between Scanlan and Grog is perfect, but my brain keeps trying to read Scanlan in a squeaky voice instead of Sams! The struggle is real...

Been listening to the podcast and it's nice to get some of the backstory
