One Blood: Parting Words to the Church on Race and Love

Review

Praise for One BloodJohn Perkins’s new book, One Blood, is an open invitation for the body of Christ—whether a church, denomination, or individual—to take inventory of our progress. Are we living by Christ’s standards, or have we succumbed to those of the world? While the latest research reveals that the average church is stagnant at best, Christ has challenged His church to stay in the race and get His work done! John Perkins’s book poses some tough questions and offers practical advice for doing just that.Tony EvansSenior pastor, Oak Cliff Bible FellowshipPresident, The Urban Alternative “Perkins rightly states that true reconciliation with our brothers and sisters ‘from every nation’ has been long overdue, and we continue to witness disastrous results. ... Dr. Perkins's insight and guidance on this subject are well worth considering by today's church leadership as well as individual members of the body of Christ.”Rick Warren Founding pastor of Saddleback Church and author of The Purpose Driven LifeI’m not quite sure where to begin with Dr. John Perkins’s latest and, perhaps, final book, One Blood. I think the best way to capture the heart of this book is that, ultimately, this is a love letter to the church. By this, I’m not suggesting that this is a nebulous or fluffy invitation to a feel good, pop psychology about the injustice of racism. Rather, it’s both fierce and tender, pastoral and prophetic, lamenting and hopeful. Dr. Perkins—both through his words and corroborated by a life faithfully lived—invites us to a deeper love for God and for neighbor—including and especially those that don’t look like us, think like us, or feel like us. And in a world today of so much pain, fear, and division, we need to desperately be reminded of God’s reconciling truth, grace, and love.Eugene ChoPastor, humanitarian, and author of Overrated: Are We More in Love with the Idea of Changing the World Than Actually Changing the World? This is a powerful, prophetic appeal to people of faith to address our nation’s tragic history of racial injustice. Like Daniel, Amos, and Micah, John Perkins has profound insight on the health of our nation and the sin of racial bigotry that has burdened us for too long. One Blood is an altar call for justice to which we should all respond.Bryan StevensonFounder and executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative, clinical professor at New York University School of Law, and author of Just MercyJohn Perkins has been giving me a transfusion of reconciling love for forty years. We may be one, but John has always had the better blood, more of Christ’s healing and renewing love. So over and over, both for me and for so many, John has infused us with fresh vision and bold passion for God’s reconciling love and justice. This wise book testifies that that same blood is still vital and pumping hard!Mark LabbertonPresident, Fuller Theological SeminaryI am so thankful that John Perkins has written One Blood. It is a must-read for all people. John carefully and powerfully weaves Scripture, his personal story, illustrations of true reconciliation with an encouraging style that brings hope. I loved reading it and so will you.Wayne GordonFounding pastor of Lawndale Community Church and chairman of Christian Community Development AssociationOne Blood is indeed, in Dr. Perkins’s own words, a “manifesto” and the culmination of his life’s work and calling to realize biblical reconciliation. There’s a clear sense of urgency and candor about the days ahead for the church, the all-important role of the gospel message, and the baton that has to pass to the next generation.I often say Dr. Perkins is a true national treasure. Here he has written his very heart and soul—a history and biography—in One Blood, and has poured all of himself out in beautiful, selfless love. This book is a must-read for any and all who share the burden for this ongoing fight.Judah SmithLead pastor, Churchome (formerly The City Church)New York Times bestselling author, Jesus Is ____.

From the Back Cover

“There is no institution on earth more equipped or more capable of bringing transformation to the cause of reconciliation than the Church.”Words of wisdom to the next generation from a pioneer of the civil rights movementJohn M. Perkins was born in Mississippi in the 1930s into a sharecropping family and lived through the hate-filled and tumultuous decades thereafter. He has dedicated his life to biblical reconciliation. Now, at age 87, he entrusts the church with the truths he wants us to know while there’s still time. One Blood looks at everything from lament and forgiveness to racial tensions and mutual fear. You’ll learn why "racial reconciliation" isn’t the goal. And most importantly, you’ll learn how to walk forward on the path toward oneness in Christ. As racial tensions rise, the world needs the church to lead now more than ever. But true leadership starts with listening.Let’s gather round and lean in as wisdom speaks. Dr. John M. Perkins is the founder and president emeritus of the John and Vera Mae Perkins Foundation and cofounder of Christian Community Development Association. He has served in advisory roles under five U.S. presidents, is one of the leading evangelical voices to come out of the American civil rights movement, and is an author and international speaker on issues of reconciliation, leadership, and community development. For his tireless work he has received 14 honorary doctorates. One Blood, along with Dr. Perkins other books, provides an enduring legacy for a man who continues to leave his mark on American culture.

When older people are nearing the latter years of their life, it is important for us to listen to their years of wisdom being shared as they leave their legacy for us to learn from and build upon. This is the case for John Perkins, an elder statesman of the Christian faith and of civil rights (among other things) who has written another masterpiece that is full of needed insight and prophetic words for our time – One Blood: Parting Words to the Church on Race (Moody Publishers, 2018). For Perkins, this is his bottom line urgent message that he wishes to directly inject into our way of thinking and our way of living in these days of confusion, hatred, and violent behavior. It is a message of recognizing that we who are humans are one race who together must set aside our differences and move toward biblical reconciliation that Perkins would say removes our tensions while restoring our relationships as we love one another in practical ways. The book itself is a life-time of lessons shared as a blueprint for needed change. The key to this change, which is consistently reinforced throughout the book, is found in the Church. As noted in the introduction, “[C]ommunity development can only take us so far – because this is a gospel issue. The problem of reconciliation in our country and in our churches is much too big to be wrestled to the ground by plans that begin in the minds of men. This is a God-sized problem. It is one that only the Church, through the power of the Holy Spirit, can heal. It requires the quality of love that only our Savior can provide. And it requires that we make some uncomfortable confessions.” The recipe for this pursuit of justice is what Perkins lays out simply, boldly, and clearly: know who we are as human beings and as the Church of Jesus Christ, practice lament, confession, forgiveness, and repentance, persevere, pray, and pursue love. To help show us that these things are realistic and possible, there are even four stories of local churches who are putting these things into practice highlighted for us to glean from.As a Christ-follower, I have always committed to trying to live in the way that Perkins describes here (and in his other writings) – so I find this as another fresh reminder of things that I need to be doing myself, even as I find myself gaining some new insights along the way. As a pastor, I have consistently tried to model this and teach the same ideas to the people in my spiritual care (as a college professor, the same is true in the classroom and with my students) – so I find myself vigorously nodding in agreement when, in chapter one, he writes that “the black church can’t fix this. And the white church can’t fix this. It must be the reconciled Church, black and white Christians together imaging Christ to the world.” He adds later, at the chapter’s end, that it’s “going to take intentionally multiethnic and multicultural churches to bust through the chaos and confusion of the present moment and redirect our gaze to the revolutionary gospel of reconciliation.”Most of the time, I find at least some degree of disagreement with an author or a book. But honestly, in this case, I am finding it difficult to find anything significant – or anything at all – with which to disagree. I’m not saying that this is the perfect book or that John Perkins is a perfect man who never has anything wrong to say. I’m just saying that this book, One Blood, is one of the most important books to read at this time in our nation’s history. It is a gold mine of wise instruction that will serve well as a very practical tool for use in ministry, teaching, and discussions with various people. I believe this book to be an invaluable resource for the Church, with implications reaching far beyond the black-white struggle that is most prominent in our culture and throughout our communities. I highly recommend this book to all who follow Jesus, and even to those who don’t. I especially commend it to pastors, church leaders, denominational executives, college and seminary professors, and anyone interested in pursuing true reconciliation within a context of broken relationships, especially those broken along ethnic lines.Well done, Dr. Perkins, well done. Thank you for your faithfulness to Christ and to the cause, and for the influence you continue to have in our lives!

In a world stressed and divided by tribalism, John Perkins brings his decades of experience in civil rights, race relations and reconciliation efforts to illuminate the core truth that we are all of One Blood, and it is from that premise where love and hope and goodness can be found. When we see each and every human being as part of our family, recognizing and acting with our best intentions, then a path forward towards a more civil society is possible. He draws from his deep reservoir of experience and highlights examples of those who are carrying the baton. I hope that everyone involved in difficult conversations regarding race relations would read this book and continue to live out the truths found in the gems of his wisdom. It won't be easy, but it's the path forward. And the church can lead it.

I bought this because I am a white male conservative christian living in Oakland CA. I found the "One Blood" concepts in the book to be good. I found the Statist, left leaning concepts in the book to be off the mark and ultimately a cause of deep concern. Can we achieve ecclesiastical integration within the framework of traditional western liberalism without destroying the foundations of our civil liberties?

The task and ministry of all Christ followers is reconciliation. This is of course the ministry of the gospel- being reconciled to God in Christ. Dr. Perkins reminds us that it is also reconciliation between people as well.I heartily recommend this book. I believe it has a great deal of hope to share.

Dr. Perkins powerfully captures the needed, necessary, work of the contemporary church! He pulls no punches and challenges the church to BE THE CHURCH and quit putting off what must define The Church today: reconciliation with God and reconciliation with one another.

The book practically reads itself, I couldn't put it down. It's all marked and highlighted, and already passed on to a friend. This will shape your thoughts on reconciliation and touch every part of your life - individually, as a family, as a church, systemically, all of it. The work of unity and reconciliation is so core to the gospel, I found myself marveling at the will and love of God, and felt a deep desire not only *for* true friendship, but to *be* a true friend.John Perkins deserves sainthood, that is all.

This book is a must read for those in church leadership. I found it helpful, eye opening and encouraging. I suggest it for those who are in ministry where only one ethnicity is involved but where many ethnic groups reside it helps to expose some naive thinking among us.

Loved the heart of John Perkins that came through in this book. Knowing the man helps, hearing him speak and share his heart. Not an academic read necessarily, but a good call for love and justice.

Sword of a Champion: The Story of Sharon Monplaisir (Anything You Can Do... New Sports Heroes for Girls)

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-8-Informative, instructive, and motivational biographies on basketball-star Lieberman-Cline and Olympian-fencer Monplaisir. Written to promote girls' participation in sports, each biography is based on interviews with the athlete and stresses the gender challenges that she had to overcome. Irrepressible Lieberman-Cline never wavered from her competitive "tomboy" determination to excel on the playground and later on the basketball court despite objections from her mother. Timid, loner Monplaisir found her niche with a supportive high school fencing coach who encouraged her to expand her horizons and to develop her talent. A concluding "Sports Talk" section addressed to adults offers a discussion guide on topics from "Body Image," "Competing against the Boys," and "Lack of Family Support" to "Difficulties with the Coach" (Lieberman-Cline) and "Temper Tantrums" (Monplaisir). Research and understanding are enhanced by a career-highlights chronology and specific sport chronology. Both volumes serve a clear educational purpose. The childlike black-and-white drawings do not enhance the realistic, factual presentations, but the upbeat, conversational tone may inspire readers.Gerry Larson, Durham School of the Arts, NC Copyright 2001 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From the Introduction by Jackie Joyner-Kersee: More than 25 years ago, the Women's Sports Foundation was founded to promote the lifelong participation of girls and women in sports and fitness. We have been very successful, and we have seen many changes over the years. At that time only one in 27 girls played sports; now it's one in three. And that's because more and more opportunities exist to be a female athlete and also to follow female sports heroes. Even with thousands of girls attending World Cup Soccer or cheering on their favorite WNBA team, we still have a long way to go. We need to get the message out to more girls. We need to let every girl know how great it feels to play sports and how very important it is to her whole being. We still have too many 11- and 12-year-old girls dropping out of sports or never even having had the chance to play at all. In fact, if a girl does not participate in sports by age 10, there is a less than 10-percent chance that she will be participating when she is 25. Research suggests that girls who participate in sports have a real advantage over girls who do not. Girls active in sports are more likely to be successful in school, less likely to get involved with drugs, and less likely to have an unwanted pregnancy. Sport and exercise can help to keep girls healthy, both physically and emotionally. The girl who is athletic feels stronger, eats and sleeps better, is more self-confident, and generally feels more positive about her life. For a very long time, boys have had unlimited resources, such as books, movies, and games about sports and their favorite sports legends. Sport is where boys have traditionally learned about achieving, goal-setting, teamwork and the pursuit of excellence. Girls and women should have these skills, too. We need to establish a large-scale network of resources about girls' sports and female athletes. And we need to give girls their own heroes. "Anything You Can Do..." is unprecedented in its concept of offering real stories of new heroes to young girls. These are the adventures of young girls coming from different backgrounds who go on to achieve excellence in sports. This series can open a whole new world for young girls. These books will give young girls a chance to explore the biographies of elite female athletes and their early sport experiences. The common thread that runs through all of these stories is a strong one - of perseverance and desire. Yet, each story is unique. Some are famous; some are not. Although the young reader may not always recognize the name of every athlete in the series, she may very well recognize herself, her friends and her teammates in these stories. Doreen and Michael Greenberg bring to this series a long dedication to providing positive sport experiences for girls. I like their philosophy that it is not as important for the young reader to come away with the name of the person who won the big championship or the winning score, as an understanding of what it means to be a female athlete. And by including the unique "Sports Talk" section in each book, Doreen has the opportunity to use her expertise as a sport psychology consultant and researcher to discuss important issues with parents and teachers. These are issues distinctive to girls in sports, including competing with the boys, making sacrifices, dealing with coaches, anxieties about winning and losing, and concerns about body image. I am delighted that these books deal with a young girl's introduction to sports, the highs and lows of training and competition, and the reactions of family and friends, both positive and negative. It is so important for all of us to understand the young athlete as a complete person. Most of all, the books in this series are fun and exciting to read. They will inspire girls to follow their dreams - whatever they are.

Great story! My 9 yr old daughter takes fencing lessons, and it was an inspiration to find a true story of a female U.S Olympic winning fencer. Sharon Monplaisir went through a true rags to riches story, shows what determination, ambition and hard work can achieve.

What a wonderful, engaging, multifaceted book for adolescent girls.....and boys! Sharon Monplaisir's biography takes the reader through a wide range of emotions. The spirit and drive within Sharon's soul, from the depths of poverty to that as an Olympian, is an inspiration to us all. Anyone who has wanted to find a better life, but experienced doubt, and struggled to "fit in", can find hope within Sharon's many struggles. A noteworthy and heartwarming part of the book was when Sharon, representing the Women's Sports Foundation on National Girls and Women in Sports Day, addressed an auditorium of middle school aged boys and girls.A component of the book also worth its "weight in gold", is the section called "Sports Talk", which is meant to be an interactive platform for readers and their parents, teaches and coaches. It contains excellent research-based information and thought provoking questions for readers relating to issues of girls participating in sport, within the context of the book. This would be a terrific book to use in a middle school program, where integration of English, Social Studies, Physical Education, and Technology are sought.

With all the awful stories surfacing today dealing with modern athletes, we finally have a sports story to inspire youngsters --especially girls. Sharon Monplaisir is a true role model for our times. Kids should read this book. As the author of "The Art and Science of Fencing" and "The Inner Game of Fencing," and the editor-in-chief of FENCERS QUARTERLY MAGAZINE,I recommend it.

My copy of this invaluable book is dog-eared and so covered in sticky-notes it looks like it has feathers. Anyone interested in the history of Latinos in Hollywood should own this book. It is thoroughly researched and packed with little known facts, wonderful information and photos. Sadly, it is out of print. "Hispanics in Hollywood" should be reprinted and revised to include the approximately twenty years of notable Hispanics who have impacted the entertainment industry since its publication.Jan Pippins, author"Henry Darrow:Lightning in the Bottle"

This is a must-read for students of and experts in Spanish and Latin American Studies. I used it as a primary source in my doctoral dissertation in the field.

Bravo Mr. Reyes for such a deeply researched, sensitively written, book blooming with photographs of Hispanics in Hollywood celebrated over 100 years. Indeed, this was needed many years ago, especially in my start as a high school teacher in a predominantly Latino/Latina high school for 28 years. Zoot Suit was culturally affirming for East Los Angeles. The unique style and political statements opened up new worlds of research re Latino/a film. And look at the power of Teatro Campesino, and its earlier form in La Carpa, in making political statements regarding exploitation of the Mexican worker. And now, in your book, we get to look back at the contributions made in earlier times we did not know of, and contemporary times. The world of prejudice and stereotyping is So complex and being examined now in organizations such as Facing History and Ourselves, and college texts that reveal an array of a variety of cultures in America, especially of the tension between adapting and keeping two cultural worlds within and without.Alas, there are intracultural prejudices too. Sometimes more established Latinos/as make fun of the recently arrived as wetbacks. In Jewish society, those who were in the US longer than the recently arrived Jews--called them "greenhorns".I loved so much of this book and have given it five stars. I also liked the preface tremendously. I too had the experience of watching films for content and style, and pausing for the film to permeate me as long as it could. At that time, I was particularly interested in the psychological depth, and the unique style of filming of the unconscious as well as the conscious world in Fellini, Truffaut, Bergman, and many others perhaps forgotten now, and of course Bunuel. I was lucky to see and read "The Boom". "The Boom" exploded with new styles as Mexican and Latin American writers were celebrated for literary, artistic, and cinematic innovations, such as "Magical Realism, that weaves around history and political realities. Now, I would like to gently approach one line (what writer doesn't have one or many) that troubled me. You mention that "Most" of early Hollywood was controlled by Eastern European Jews. This is not really true in light of all cultures who contributed to Hollywood's start, and it itself is a stereotype that a number of books are now discussing. This belief about Jews dominating the film world actually fueled more anti-semitism than already existed severely in this country, where most Jewish immigrants were severely poor. You question why these "predominantly" Jewish promoters did not discuss their own culture. First of all--in diaspora, there were the German Jews who were more assimilated in Germany, and hence probably could have the skills and education denied Jews in Poland and Russia, and alas, Mediterranean Jews were often denied the right (many self taught while enduring backbreaking work only allowed them.)And yet, they did forge a cultural works such as Yiddish theatre, books, and poetry,in America. They created while working 14 hour jobs and striking in times that treated them far more violently than strikers are treated today. These people demonstrated for All workers. This paved the way for our own work worlds to have the right to breaks, sick time, health benefits, vacation time, an 8 hour day,and unions to protect those rights. They were joined by other oppressed cultures who worked along side them such as Italians and others, forming a multi-cultural comraderie that is so needed in our world today.Actually, it is seen that there was much imitation of elitist European culture in early films. American themes came later. And alas--how complicated this was in our forging and reforging this country's identity. America was steeped in anti-semitism (and of course--hatred of all considered "the other". Early German immigrants in America faced disdain. The Irish, when looking for work, saw signs that read "Irish Need Not Apply. Later on, some people of these backgrounds forgot that they were scorned as new immigrants arrived. So you see, so many groups in this country have not had their stories told.If there was a pitch for a movie about pogroms, it would not have sold--maybe if Errol Flynn flew in to swashbuckle those killing and raping sprees. Or, what would have saved a pitch about a Jewish family headed for a beach where the sign read "No Jews or Dogs allowed"? An exhibition from a few years ago called Degenerate Art (art that Nazi's banned) showed a big nosed and walleted series of series of movie and music producers, for Monkey like looking African-Americans ( inferior to the Nazis also) playing jazz (banned in Nazi Germany).Actually, true art in film has been noted to have been brought in by German emigre artists both non-Jewish and Jewish, who were not free to do their form of art, especially abstraction, in Nazi Germany. Also, they left a regime they knew was appalling. Therefore, in the term "most"( re Jews), there needs to be a bit more study. The truth is, if one filmed about life in Mexico, it would be very different in Jalisco and Oaxoca--because the cultures are different. Gabriel Garcia's Columbian world and Carlos Fuentes' world in Mexico would be different. At my school, the Goths and the Rockers live in different universes. Does this read as a bash? No!!!The book is fantastic and a must read for all cultures! Prejudice of the"other" we do not know needs to be perpetually unbound. And wow--what an incredible array of Latino/a film history. All should grab it as a must read!! I am so glad, at this time in film, we see Chinese Americans, films from Bombay, Syria, Armenian themes--and many previously unsung cultures in our theaters. We are now seeing the truth told about many atrocities such as the treatment of Native-Americans (here first)--for instance, the smallpox virus placed in American Indian blankets, as a form of genocide. There is knowledge imparted of exploitation of other immagrants--for instance, the shooting of some Chinese American railroad workers for "pay".As for all the new styles and representations of all cultures (look at this year's (2009) many awards for Slum-dog Millionaire), filmed in India. These are added cultural fabrics, with textures and threads of expression that expand our global awareness. In this sense, we grow in cultural understanding and the culture of ourselves (I believe each person Is a singular identity of many cultural influences). As long as this review is, I think I could write a book because cultural pride, and intra-cultural love and understanding are so important to me. And Do know I am savoring every page of Hispanics in Hollywood. No one will eat Fritos thinking of The Frito Bandito,or drool over the Tiajuana stereotype of loose women easy to pay for "a moment"! Let's cover those on Hollywood Blvd or all over instead...yes?Thank God there are no more of those snoozing Mexican sobreros hiding the sleeping Mexican, denoting the Mexican as comical and lazy (and if anyone has one--bash it)!Though I may speak of objects or books not filmed--they were certainly influences.I must also say that I know Mr. Reyes as eclectic, a wordsmith, an activist, and an educator. When Zoot Suit came out, Mr. Reyes spoke about the field of publicity , while imparting information about the production of Zoot Suit to my the students, who were were given tickets and other fun items. We were all ecstatic with the "prep" for the film! Our students were also given free tickets to a film called Triumph of the Spirit (not"of the will") the Nazi propaganda film. A number of my students, predominantly Latino, came to see the film about a Greek Jewish boxer survivor in Auschwitz. This is not named in the credits of the films Mr. Reyes has publicized, listed in Hispanics in Hollywood.I saw my students sobbing while watching Triumph of the Spirit, even some big guys sitting next to me. This is what we want--to break through and feel all of our pains and triumphs in this diverse country. In your talk at our school, Mr. Reyes said: look at us--all different cultures, colors (class is another issue)-"-Beautiful!" When I also taught at a State College, where I had a real United Nations of students, it was so great that at the end, they spoke of misconceptions of each other at the beginning, and how they changed.Do know I am celebrating this book as a contribution to Global understanding. I did want Mr. Reyes to know that a single stereotypical line we can All make, can hurt. As one student of mine in a Facing History and Ourselves class said, you can remove a bullet, but you cannot remove a hurtful misunderstanding. And I know you are one who believes in the same thing.Incidentally, I would really like to see a film about a kid growing up loving film on the upper West Side of New York, who is from Puerto Rico. Plus, I applaud your work in probing Hawaii in film. I loved seeing photos of Robert Louis Stevenson visiting and merging in Hawaiian culture. When I went to a hotel where a lot of stars went, it saddened me to see Queen Liliokalani and family in stiff Victorian attire they felt they had to wear.I am looking forward to more of your works (and films?). The cinema permeates so much of the psyche, letting us venture into other worlds, and the worlds of others, as both of us experienced in our youth and later.Oh--just a little bit of history to end you may be interested in. Max Factor, who came from an Orthodox Jewish family in the old world and had made the wigs Jewish married women wore, introduced wigs to Hollywood! Also, he changed the world of the pancake make-up. In fact, he invented the science of make-up that inspired all women to wear it. My students saw the Max Factor Museum that had the red haired room, blonde, brunette, etc.Guess where his original house is? It is in Boyle Heights (East LA) and inhabited by the parents of some friends of mine. Boyle Heights started out as a Jewish neighborhood--actually you might say "to keep Them with their own." Then came Russians, and Latinos, African Americans, and Japanese (sadly ripped away later by the Japanese interment camps)...and others. The community was mainly very radical. There is a wonderful documentary called Meet Me at Brooklyn and Soto. A woman recalls that the high school I taught in, Roosevelt High, had true cultural harmony--and pride days. In fact, many Jewish families watched over the Japanese homes to make sure there was no hateful pillaging! As an afterthought regarding Jews not telling their stories, what about the first Talkie, The Jazz Singer with Al Jolson? In it, he is a Cantor's son (singer in synagogue) whose father wants him to follow in his footsteps. But Jolson is torn, because in his character, he wants to be a jazz musician...which he pursues instead. This was filmed at the largest and probably most exquisite Jewish temple in Boyle Heights, now (or the last time I saw it) full of pigeons and Graffiti. So, there you go re Jewish themes in film. (Just look away when you see Jolson's "blackface" make-up as he sings "Mammy"). Once again--here is the tension and triumph all of us face in our multi-cultural country and world. Rochmanna Miller

By JONATHAN KIRSCH, Special to The LA Times "...An illuminating and entertaining survey of films and television programs in which Latino actors, settings or themes figure prominently, "Hispanics in Hollywood" is full of such surprises. Anthony Quinn, perhaps best known as Zorba the Greek, is only one of many actors whose Mexican origins were once concealed, and there are many others whose Latino roots have only recently come to public attention, ranging from Rita Hayworth (born Margarita Cansino) to John Gavin (born John Anthony Golenar) to Raquel Welch (born Raquel Tejada). And it was a young Emilio Estevez who boldly reclaimed his own Latino family history and thus revealed to the world that the real name of his father, Charlie Sheen, is Ramon More often Latino actors found themselves in an awkward dilemma in Hollywood, as the authors of "Hispanics in Hollywood" point out--if their Latino identities were not concealed, they were put to use in depicting stereotyped Latino characters: "maids, slum dwellers, drug addicts and gang members," co-author Luis Reyes reminds us, or "cruel dictators, mustachioed bandits and beautiful señoritas." Only in the last couple of decades have Latino actors and directors enjoyed the opportunity to tell stories about their own heritage in a more open, honest and affirming voice in movies such as "Zoot Suit," "La Bamba," "Stand and Deliver," "Selena" and "A Walk in the Clouds." Reyes, a movie publicist who is also a chronicler of Hollywood's Latin American heritage, describes the book as "an attempt to show the way Hollywood has depicted Hispanic Americans and Latin America, while also pointing out the contributions to Hollywood movies and television made by unsung Hispanic Americans as well as those more famous." Thus, his book can be approached as a serious effort to ponder the issues of race and ethnicity in American pop culture and, at the same time, as one of those useful reference works that can be pulled down from the shelf when puzzling over some old and obscure movie on cable.

Is a great book...it tells you mostly all about the hispanic efforts throughout the year and it give you plenty of history.Anibal O. Lleras

Excellent book. I usually prefer the O'Reily series but thIs book contains a lot of the information needed to know on a high-mid to senior level knowledge of the language. Highly recommended to any objective c developer looking to learn the "advance" parts of objective c. Covers details like multithreading, blocks, web services, etc.

Great so far. There are allot of things that are good general review.Others are those little things that will make your code better like having private properties, all the diff options for protocols.Clear definitions on categories, extensions, when to use what and the differences each gives you.

Good book! Some nice points

Quite a good book. I've been programming in Objective-C for many years, and I still found things in this book that I didn't know. I'm not sure whether it would be a good introduction for beginners, since I am not a beginner myself and have trouble putting myself in those shoes. But for people who have done at least a little playing around in Obj-C, this book should open up new horizons. The breadth of the topics covered is vast: the Objective-C language and runtime, much (all?) of Foundation (but not AppKit), plus some coverage of Xcode as well. Understandably, then, the book is quite long, and yet still gives just a single-sentence mention to some entire classes. I think that's good, though; the author has done a good job of prioritizing the content, going into a fair bit of depth on topics that are interesting and important, while just mentioning the existence of many other things so you know they are there if you need them. There are errors, both typographical and factual, but they are not major; none derailed me. There are places where the book is a little brief and confusing; I found the chapter on blocks to be particularly unhelpful. I would have given the book only four stars, for these reasons; but the author earned the last star back. I emailed him with some questions about blocks, and he replied within a day with a substantial and helpful response. Twice. So, five stars, although the book could use a pass over it by a good editor.

I am not sure if the other reader downloaded the book. I did skim it for 5 minutes and information looks valuable. If I get a chance I will update my review.

The kindle sample tells me less than the amazon listing page. The sample includes no content. Nothing. Only a table of contents. Waste of time. Still can't tell if I would want to buy it or not from that. Sigh....

A deep dive into the Objective/C language. Written for old version of Xcode but still east to follow up. Will recommend to anyone looking for some advanced stuff regarding this lang.
