Badger's Parting Gifts is one of my favorite children's books. I was first introduced to it on the night before my mother died, so it has a very special place in my heart. She was a psychotherapist who worked with terminally ill patients and their grieving children, but after a 3 year battle with pancreatic cancer, she was now the one lying in coma in the very same hospital where she had accompanied many others to the end of their life. When one of her students came to say farewell that night, she sat by her bedside and told us that she had brought a book that my mother loved and often read to bereaved children. She wanted to read it to her one last time. So, these are the circumstances under which my sister and I received the unexpected gift of this beautifully illustrated story. And that was an unforgettable and deeply moving experience! In French, the book is titled "Au Revoir Blaireau" (Farewell, Badger). These ended up being the very last words I whispered in my mother's ear before leaving her for the night. She died at dawn the next day. I have read and re-read the book many times since then, in both French and English, and have given countless copies away. If you know children who are grieving someone they love, and need support processing their grief and finding uplifting ways to remember those they miss, this soulful little book will be very helpful. I happen to think it's also very healing for adults. [Dear Susan, I am hoping you read your book reviews, and am leaving a short message for you here because I could not find a website or contact info to reach you directly. Simply, I wanted to thank you for all the ways that Badger and his friends Mole, Frog, Fox and Rabbit have touched my heart and my life. And I thought you might like to know that it helped my mother and other French therapists support a lot of kids to befriend their experience of loss. Your wise words and delightful illustrations have been a great gift to us all].

My husband passed away before my now 6 yr old son was born and this book was a further way for he and I to connect on that deeper level regarding his Dad's passing and what goes on after. This book is insightful, gentle, and so sweet. I can not recommend this enough. 10 stars.

I purchased this book as a gift for my 4 year old granddaughter and she absolutely loves it. It is well written and while it dealt with the death of an animal she immediately identified it with missing her grandparents after an extended visit. My daughter was able to help my granddaughter vocalize her feelings and look at it from a broader perspective - turning the story into a learning experience. It is a beautiful story and she likes to have it read to her regularly.

I purchased this book after reading numerous reviews (Amazon, Barnes and Nobel, etc) regarding books to discuss the concept of death to my daughter after a family member was diagnosed with terminal cancer. The illustrations are very well made, and the concept of the book is very well written. Many complain about the book referring to death as "going down a very log tunnel". Although clearly not the greatest concept, the book isn't so much about Badger's physical death. The book is more about what Badger left behind in terms of the values he taught his friends, and experiences he had with them. Basically, no matter what happens physically, our thoughts and memories is what lives on. My daughter (5 years old at the time) read it the first time and didn't fully understand and was asking questions, which in my opinion was good because I wanted to discuss the topic with her. After that, as she read it, she began to understand the concept and asked more questions. The story line is well written. The price is a little steep for the amount of pages and being paperback, but it did the job I intended it to do.

This was an adorable little story, explaining death in subtle terms that little children can understand. It shows the Badger as his life is winding down, his health not as robust as it once was. The badger bids his friends goodnight, retires to his home, and gently passes on, shrugging off his aches and pains as a relief. All those who looked up to him and learned from him are saddened, but come to realize that they are better off having known him, and cherish the memories they have of him and the things he taught them. It's a sweet little story that will give your child a little bit of an understanding of death, and how to cherish the memories of those who have passed on.Ye GODS though, don't read this thing while drinking.

Have bought many copies over the years....I send instead of card when someone loved dies. Sent to me by my dearest friend years ago when our Golden Retriever died....have sent it to nephews when my brother died....well received.....I keep a copy on hand in our "card drawer"....

I read this to my daughter when she was three and found it very helpful. I liked the ambiguous ending because I think anyone can explain the meaning of the "long tunnel" in terms that fit with your own beliefs about what happens at death. The book doesn't handle that for you. As for a relationship with the characters, as one reviewer mentioned, we read some of the other books in the series so that my daughter could see that Badger had other experiences in his life before he became old and sick. I would recommend using other books in the series to allow children to form relationships with the characters outside of this death experience. For books that deal with other types of death and dying situations, Honey For a Child's Heart offers recommendations with guidelines as to the type of situation depicted and the appropriate ages of the target audience. In our case, this was just what we were looking for. She had a great-grandmother die and then was aware of the death of an aged animal at the zoo, so we wanted to talk about old age and death.

Okay, simple declarative sentence. Tracy Chevalier is a brilliant writer and storyteller. Othello has always been, for me, the least satisfactory of the four major tragedies despite the gorgeousness of Shakespeare's language. Iago is the only really interesting character and a plum role for an actor. Othello and Desdemona might be described (by me) as naïve and gullible, maybe a bit stupid.Chevalier's genius in her treatment of the play is in taking a not very credible plot with immature, not very credible characters and placing them where they belong-right smack in the world of a 6th graders' playground. These children, barely out of childhood, are inching toward adolescence, hormones beginning to kick in, credulous, gullible, naïve, and not stupid. It's the perfect setting for this story which seems rather silly and contrived with allegedly mature adults as its principals, but is not at all silly at with eleven year olds learning to be adults. To top it off, Chevalier even observes the classical unities of Greek drama, long discarded by Shakespeare's time.Brava, Tracy

Previously in the Hogarth Shakespeare series we've seen a stylized video game version (Winterson's The Gap of Time), an interrogation of an iconic character (Jacobson's My Name is Shylock), an examination of class and gender differences flattened into a bland rom-com (Tyler's Vinegar Girl), and a brilliant examination of death and loss that came with the unbelievable Easter egg of all the insane ways Margaret Atwood could think to stage Shakespeare (Hag-Seed) What we haven't seen is anything that improved upon the original - until now. Before you break out the pitchforks, let me clarify: I'm not saying Tracy Chevalier is a better writer than William Shakespeare. I'm saying that by relocating Othello to a 1970s schoolyard in D.C. in her New Boy she turns the fatal flaw of the original play - that the action escalates insanely and all the characters have the communication skills and maturity of ten year olds - into its greatest strength. Of course popular girl Dee and Ghanaian-transplant Osei develop an instant connection - that's how kids are. Of course bully Ian decides he's displeased with a possible change to the schoolyard pecking order and decides to bring the new boy down a peg - that's how kids are. Of course things get immediately out of hand and everyone's dialled to eleven - that's how kids are. What looks unforgivably juvenile in a group of Venetian soldiers and their wives and girlfriends makes perfect sense in a middle school. You expect any retelling of Othello to deal extensively with issues of race and belonging, but Chevalier delivers the added bonus of a young Dee(sdemona) with a complex inner life who has several female friends with their own issues and motivations, and while I'm not saying they're acing the Bechdel test, they're definitely outperforming their source material. All these layers and overwhelming emotions are drawn in Chevalier's simple, spare prose, which evokes poetry while still consciously avoiding aping Shakespeare's verse. While Hogarth's series got off to a bit of a wobbly start and has seen the occasional stumble (looking at you, Tyler!), Atwood and Chevalier's most recent entries seem to indicate they've finally hit their stride and in this case, in my mind at least, outpaced the original.

Osei ("just call me O") is a new boy at his Washington DC school. The son of a Ghanaian diplomat, this is his fourth school in as many years. Somewhat incredibly—although this does seem to be set around 1970—he is the only black kid in the school. Handsome, athletic, and smart, he is an object of immediate interest, especially to popular, blond-haired Dee, who is assigned to help him through his first day. Soon O and Dee ("what a coincidence we are both letters") have paired up. Seeing her feel his hair and him touch her cheek infuriates the racist teacher Mr. Brabant, and inspires a deeper hatred in Ian, the playground bully. We are all set for a replay of OTHELLO in this grade-school setting, for this is the fifth entry in the Hogarth Shakespeare Series. And alas, distinctly the least successful. It is not that Tracy Chevalier is a lesser author than Jeanette Winterson, Howard Jacobson, Anne Tyler, or Margaret Atwood—although you might argue that—but that the school setting, the age range (on the cusp of puberty), and the decision to cram everything into the course of a single day belittles Shakespeare's drama without offering any compensating value in return. I have to admit, though, that growing up in a very different school system myself, the environment is entirely foreign to me, but Chevalier did little to convince me of its reality. The book is both too compressed and too diffuse. Compressed in that, even with teenage hormones in full spate, the cycle of initial attraction, commitment, jealousy, and rage just won't fit into one school day. Diffuse in having too many characters too ill-defined, too many incidents of only peripheral relevance, and a complete absence of the tragic intensity and underlying atavism that is such a strong component of the Shakespeare.

The writing is excellent, but the ending is awful. Well, what did I expect? It is Othello. Also it seemed unlikely that a six grader(the villain) would be old enough to be so diabolical and crafty. When I finished, I felt bad for everyone including the narrow minded teachers.

This book will break your heart. I initially read it for the novelty of one of the greatest tragedies taking place in an elementary school, but found the story incrediblly compelling. The tenderness and intimacy between D and O are spellbinding. The tragedy is alarming, romantic, and deeply sad. This story invigorates an already beautiful tale into something intensely real and present. New Boy is a live play acted on a playground and I'm still reeling.

Chevalier's genius is on full display in New Boy. The riveting story takes place in one day on the grounds of an elementary school. Set during the 1970s, it's authenticity brought back memories of my own childhood. But New Boy is more than nostalgia. It's a tension-filled gripping tale you won't want to put down.

I absolutely love every single one of these guides by Wallpaper*. They are directed towards people more into art, design, and the more trendy locations in each city, but if that is what interests you, you will love them. They always recommend places where locals might check out and are not huge tourist traps. The restaurant and bar recommendations are always spot on!

I love Wallpaper* City Guides and this issue is no exception. Based on its recommendations, I found a great place to have dinner and get a haircut in NYC. If you want to learn about Times Square or other tourist traps, get Frommer's or Fodor's. Wallpaper* City Guide are for those who are looking for a more unique, design-based travel experience. I'm a big fan.

It's good as a supplement to other more comprehensive city guides, but I wouldn't buy this one if you're only getting one guide. It's more focused on shops and hot restaurants I would say. Definitely had some cool trendy places to eat in it.

This is not a guide book at all. It is essentially a magazine advertisement section. The "landmarks" chapter is 2 pictures of office buildings. I am quite sure that the few clothing stores, hotels and galleries in this "guide" paid to be included. There isn't information about anything useful. I love Wallpaper Magazine, but this book is garbage.

Lexile measures range from below 200L for early readers and text to above 1600L for advanced readers and materials. When used together Lexile measure help a reader find books at an appropriate level of challenge, and determine how well that reader will likely comprehend a text. When a Lexile text measure matches a Lexile reader measure, this is called a "targeted" reading experience. I can't believe I'm writing a good review for this book. After enjoying reading/studying Lammle's ICND1. Lammle's writing style is active, direct to the point; making the book easy to read. Contrast to Odom's ICND1's writing style which is passive, and some topic's explanations are repetitious. Lammle explains a topic in 1 page while Odom takes 2 to 4 pages (average). However, as for ICND2 books comparison (Lammle vs Odom). Odom's ICND2 book is more superior than Lammle's ICND2 book. I bought Odom's book first. Being spoiled with Lammle's writing style, it was hard for me to read the first chapter of Odom's book. I would get frustrated with Odom's repetitious writing style that I would get a mild headache. So, I decided to buy Lammle's book. Lammle's ICND2 book has the same good writing style, however, it has half less pages than Odom's book. I decided to give Odom's book another try. However, this time around, I started reading last 3 chapters of the book. The last chapters was written more active than the first chapter. After reading the last chapters, I got accustomed to Odom's writing style. So, I flipped the book and started reading the first chapter with no problem. Now, while I'm writing this review I'm on chapter 7. Additionally, Odom's book have more topic explanations than Lammle's.

I'm docking this one star for not having been updated with complete SDN material (it wasn't available at time of publication, but that was two years ago), and another for being incomplete elsewhere since there are questions on ICND2 that are not covered by this book. It's also an absolute slog to read through, but that applies to a lot of technical material, so I'm not lowering the rating for that. All that having been said, I passed the exam easily, and this was my primary study material. But I have a lot more experience than a typical CCNA candidate (I'm really only doing this since it's a prereq for CCNP), so make of that what you will. What I would say is that this book and some subnetting practice are probably enough to pass the exam.

I find this book and INCD1 easy to read and love the goals incorporated into each chapter with a final review for each segment. I wish I had gotten this book first. Now off to hopefully pass the exam!

First, I want to say that both this and the ICND1 book do a great job of presenting the material in a concise and coherent way. I have been enjoying both books. The only reason why I am giving this review a one star rating is because Amazon customer services has made it impossible for me to inform them of this issue. I placed the order on this book quite a few months ago, and should have skimmed through it as soon as it arrived in order to ensure that everything was in order. But I guess I wasn't thorough enough and was unaware that an entire chapter was missing until now.Amazon won't allow me to process a return, and I can't even seem to figure out how to navigate their overly complicated customer services page just to simply inform them of the defect.Great book, but Amazon has really left me hanging here and my study schedule has suffered because of it.

Having everything can make it a life-long task to study for the CCNA. When looking to touch up on topics I found myself flipping through dozens of pages and never found what I was looking for. If you’re new to networking AND are the type to take a book a read and remember everting you read, then this book is for you.

This was an outstanding guide for adding to the information presenting in the CCENT book. I bought both together and being able to swap back and forth between the two books based on Foundation Topics is crucial to understanding how the author writes.Even after using Cisco devices for over 4 years, this book explained the topics and ideas that I have not had to learn, but needed to know for the exam. This author writes in a very logical and well thought out manner that may appear as "dry" to some. That being said, there is not nad information in this guide and can be essential to helping anyone pass the ICND 2 exam, as long as they follow along with the diagrams and really apply themselves to the virtual trainers.

After reading some of these reviews, I got a bit concerned, but the Official Cert Guide (OCG) had gotten me through ICND1 all by itself with no problems. Unfortunately, after using this 200-105 book as the primary source of my study (with about a month's worth of Cisco Learning Network labs thrown in), I did not pass the ICND2 (got 790). As usual, I had studied so much that was not on the test, and there were plenty of tricky questions. The more important point is that there was definitely stuff on the test I had never seen before -- was not covered in the OCG. With the test still very fresh in my mind, I picked up a copy of the Lammle CCNA INCD2 Study Guide, and I clearly saw material covered that was on my test but not covered in the OCG. I went through over 500 of the OCG practice test questions -- spent hours and hours worrying about root bridge STP concepts and had zero of those questions on the test.Bottom line -- this book is not enough by itself. I recommend the Lammle book. It is much, much more concise, and somehow it seems to know better what is important for the test. Hopefully with both of these sources under my belt, I will pass the second time around.Update: Well, I did barely manage to pass the second time around (took test as soon as possible after 1st failure). I spent a week using the Lammle study guide, and it really helped. Unfortunately, there is just too much material on these tests. There were still things on the test not covered by either book. Good luck to you all.

Love Odom for getting my Certs! I read his ICND 1 book and passed the exam. I am only 7 chapters in on ICND2 OCG and solidifying all the informatio to pass this test and become CCNA certified. These exams are very tough and i could not pass without these books.
