"A wonderful book. When you travel across the United States, take this guide along with you."―Martha Stewart"Hamburger America is George Motz at his best. It's not a surprise that a new edition is mandatory reading for fans of the book and for a new generation of burger mavens who are new to the compendium. Where it all intersects is at the corner of Brilliant Boulevard and America's Favorite Food Street. The hamburger is America, and Motz is its most passionate and authoritative voice."―Andrew Zimmern, Host of Travel Channel's Bizarre Foods and The Zimmern List"A fine overview of the best practitioners of the burger sciences."―Anthony Bourdain"Hamburger America" should be a staple in anyone's travel bag."―Bobby Flay"Just looking at this book makes me hungry, and reading George's stories will take you on the ultimate American road trip."―Michael R. Bloomberg, Mayor, New York City"For me this is not just a book, it is more of a bible that I will use as my travel guide for many years to come, on my journeys around the globe in search for the best burgers on the planet. I was looking forward to finally reading this and so glad I did. George Motz has become a food hero of mine with all the research and man hours he’s poured in to his works on the hamburger, between his books and documentary work. I love the way in Hamburger America he hilights so many classic yet previously not-well known places outside of their region with long, colorful histories. The book provides the reader with good information about the subtle (and not so subtle) regional differences when it comes to making hamburgers while giving ample description of each individual place Motz has visited. Somehow he manages to give each their own unique description and avoids becoming too redundant, something that would be easy to do given that he is largely paying homage to only one menu item. The book never became boring and I looked forward to each section. It seems he writes just enough paragraphs about each place and sprinkles in just enough personal details to keep you interested without spending too much time on any one. In between the various state chapters are included some special side tips and explanations that add to the burger knowledge.I’m looking forward to trying a lot of these great burger joints found in this book.

Have used various editions of this book for 10 years while traveling to get off the beaten path, really see the USA, and experience some of the best places, people and FOOD out there! Detailed research, interesting facts and useful tips make this an essential buy - you won't be disappointed. This newest (3rd) edition is the best yet... Thanks, George!

This is a great coffee table book with a lot of fun information.

Great update to the best burger book out there. Such a good book I actually felt compelled to leave a review which is rare.

I have every version. Particularly liked the write up about the Bellaire Broiler Burger place in Houston.

My husband loves this book and has been telling my all about burgers and planning out a cross country road trip, as well as dreaming of opening his own burger joint using all the tricks and knowledge he's learned.

There is only 1 book you need to take you to the many different regional and historical burgers of America. This is it.

They do not include anything in Wyoming. There are some great burger joints there. I also found it odd, that at least one place in Montana, at least one place in Louisiana, and 1 place in Massachusetts were not included. And 1 place that we like in Idaho wasn't there either. Overall, pretty neat book, even if some of the info could have been more inclusive, with possibly more photos. I'm seeing a road trip in our future.

Review

"One measure of an exhibition catalogue’s quality is the degree to which it makes you want to go see the exhibition. In the case of this volume, let us just say that, since picking it up, I have been wracked with pain that I have not been able to visit the Columbus Museum of Art to catch the show it accompanies, which runs through January 20. It is a sumptuously illustrated tome, with reproductions of pieces, variously iconic and little-known, by Palmer Hayden, Loïs Mailou Jones, Jacob Lawrence, Augusta Savage, Horace Pippin, and many, many more. Haygood is a biographer and journalist (famed for writing the story that became the film The Butler), and he’s accomplished the rare feat of weaving together rich scholarship with luminous prose. Including contributions from a variety of experts, it takes an expansive view of its subject, looking not only at visual art but vernacular photography, writing, and periodicals of the movement. 'The Harlem Renaissance lives,' Haygood writes. 'It sings. It continues to do its part to explain America to itself, and also to the world.' This book is a superb vehicle for that remarkable story. —Andrew Russeth"Celebrating the centennial of the creative and intellectual flowering, “I Too Sing America” is a unique exploration of the subject that brings a journalist together with his hometown museum and the community where he grew up in Columbus, Ohio... Titled after Langston Hughes’s iconic poem, “I Too Sing America” considers the Harlem Renaissance “as a movement not confined to either upper Manhattan or the interwar period, but as a historical moment of national and international significance that continues to have reverberations far beyond its typically noted end date in the mid-1930s.” The catalog is a wonderful volume lavishly illustrated with the art and photography that defined the Renaissance. Haygood’s essays on how Harlem emerged as the mecca of Black America, the feverish publishing the period sparked, the dance, theater, and music the era engendered, the two Reverend Powells, and W.E.B. Du Bois, Langston Hughes, and Zora Neale Hurston, appear throughout the volume. His contributions are punctuated by writings about individual visual artists, including Malvin Gray Johnson, Winold Reiss, Aaron Douglas, Palmer Hayden, Augusta Savage, and James VanDerZee, authored by the museum’s curators." —Culture Type

i love this book. it's very comprehensive, with lot's of colored pictures.i received it in a timely fashion. described accurately

A stunning book to leaf through with compelling text--a reminder of the enormous talent pool that resided in Harlem in the late twenties.

From October 19, 2018 -- January 20, 2019, the Columbus Museum of Art presented a large exhibition "I Too Sing America" in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Harlem Renaissance. The precise dating and nature of the Harlem Renaissance is subject to debate, but it is generally thought to run from the end of WW I to the early 1930s. The exhibition has been combined with other activities in the City of Columbus celebrating the Harlem Renaissance. The commemoration of the flourishing of the arts in Harlem is a worthy project for any city to undertake. In Columbus, the project was the result of a collaboration which began in 2015 between the Museum of Art and Will Haygood who was born in Columbus. Haygood has written well-received biographies of several figures associated with Harlem, including Thurgood Marshall, Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. Sugar Ray Robinson, and Sammy Davis, Jr. As a native son, Haygood worked closely with the museum staff and curators on the content of the exhibition.Although I didn't travel to Columbus to see the exhibition, I was able to do the next-best thing by finding this new book based on the exhibition "I Too Sing America: The Harlem Renaissance at 100." The book includes many paintings, photos, sculptures, and artifacts shown at the exhibition and includes as well many items not part of the exhibition. The book also includes lengthy textual material. Haygood wrote the historical sections giving an overview of the Harlem Renaissance and its major figures. Scholars and curators at the Columbus Museum of Art wrote the sections involving the many artists whose works are featured in the book.Langston Hughes' famous 1926 poem "I, Too, Sing America" is presented at the beginning of the volume and gives the book and exhibition their theme. The book shows an extraordinary output of feeling and thought about the United States, Harlem, African American life, and the spirit of individual creativity. It shows the great cultural achievements resulting in part from the return of African American soldiers from the War and from the Great Migration to northern cities from the South. Many people will be familiar with some of the major figures, but most people will have their understanding of the Harlem Renaissance broadened and deepened by this book.Figures such as Langston Hughes, Adam Clayton Powell (father and son), Zora Neal Hurston, and W.E.B. DuBois receive substantial attention. But for me the heart of the volume was the images of the artwork. The book features many paintings by artists including Archibald Motley, Aaron Douglas, Allan Rohan Crite, Jacob Lawrence, and others. The reader meets gifted sculptors including Augusta Savage and Richmond Barthe. James Van Der Zee became a renowned photographer of the people and places of Harlem, and his work receives a great deal of deserved attention in this book together with a collection of African American vernacular photography taken mostly by amateurs. The illustrations show the gamut of life in Harlem from the streets and from the poor people to the buildings, frequent parades, tenements, and jazz clubs. The book shows a Harlem teeming with promise and with intellectual and artistic life. It is moving and inspiring. I learned a great deal about the Harlem Renaissance and wanted to learn more about many of the figures in this book that hadn't been familiar to me.In Haygood's words concluding this book, the Harlem Renaissance continues to sing. He writes."So the Harlem Renaissance lives. It sings. It continues to do its part to explain America to itself, and also to the world. Hardly a racially charged political moment has gone by since the 1960s when a poem or a quote from the renaissance hasn't been summoned. It constantly reminds us of a group of gifted artists who had their backs against the wall within the borders of their own country, and how their genius took flight."The Columbus Museum of Art deserves kudos for its exhibition and book. It gives a view of a sometimes underappreciated source of America's vibrant cultural life.Robin Friedman

The Way of the Wild Heart: A Map for the Masculine Journey, by John Eldredge

From Publishers Weekly

According to Eldredge, whose book Wild at Heart has been a fixture on the CBA and PW's monthly religion bestseller lists, Christian men have lost their way. How can the church empower its men to find that path of spiritual growth that will enable them to grow up into the image of God? Eldredge, founder and director of Ransomed Heart Ministries in Colorado Springs, Colo., attempts to answer this question in this helpful guide, a praxis-oriented follow-up volume to Wild at Heart. He begins with the observation that "God is a God of process," then identifies six stages through which men pass in their life journeys: boyhood, cowboy, warrior, lover, king and sage. Eldredge describes typical behaviors that occur in each stage, and illustrates them with examples primarily from the Bible but also from secular biographies, popular films and legends. He views the transition from one stage to another as a time when "something in us needs to be dismantled and something needs to be healed," a form of damage control that allows men to advance along Eldredge's "map." Eldredge insists that the church has not served its male population well and calls for greater insight into the masculine journey. (Nov.) John Eldredge's brilliant followup to "Wild At Heart", this book is helping me in my later years to heal from traumas I didn't even know I had. can't say enough for his descriptive style and heady insights. In the book, he details the slings and arrows of following what he calls the "masculine journey", from boyhood into manhood with many poignant observations along the way. For those who would criticize the separateness of a "masculine" journey, as a close friend did recently, asking "why can't it just be the 'human' journey?" Answer: imagine if Betty Fredan's "The Feminine Mystique" had simply been titled "The Human Mystique"? There are, in fact, differences in our gender journeys, and Eldredge's grasp of that fact and positive direction, including ultimate respect for the females in our lives, makes him a treasure in our complicated and compromised modern lives.

I highly recommend this book on so many levels.Elderidge brings the goods to the table .The book was well written, masculine and man up material to understand that rite of passage.Helped understand where the brokenness stems from..why..and in in a spiritual way how it can be healed if one is ready and willing to take the journey...takes courage.Praise you, Jesus for John and his journey...evangelistical journey that has helped so many men back to healing and a masculine spiritual loving relationship with the Almighty .It heals....I highly recommend..read it ..read it a couple times...understand that you are the beloved son..And your wife receives a better man ,your children..a better father.m...read "Epic" also

In a world that is telling men to conform/emasculate/stop being dangerous, Eldredge breathes life into the dry bones of men by reaffirming God's purpose to love and protect us as his children. The reader is taken through each stage of the masculine journey, from the stages of boyhood to the wise old sage. Eldredge reveals how men get taken out of the battle by missing out/receiving a message at key moments in the indoctrination of masculinity. I can't tell you enough how core this is. I grew up without a father, and was fortunate enough to meet a group of men at my church that are my band of brothers. We have interceded where other men failed, to speak life into those generational losses in our hearts to bring healing to our hearts. This is imperative if we are to raise young men with hearts filled with love, passion, and conviction to fight for the beauty(women in our lives) through God's strength.

n preparation for a up-and coming hike with my friend Dale, I decided to read this book. I read his first one and loved it. It was called "Wild at Heat." It is the best book I ever read for men and spirituality. In this hike, I am looking forward to the trip. The book certainly motivated me for this time in the woods. Because of this book, this journey is not about the woods as much about connecting to God. Being a minister, it is rare for me to get dirty and sweating, but my background in life is farming and manual labor. I need this hike for my heart. In the church we have taken God and placed him in the church building only. If you want God, find him on Sunday morning, but God is everywhere. In the encounters with God in the Bible, he never approaches the man in the building. This was the perfect book to inspire my future hike. Every man would be blessed by reading this journey. As I read it, my mind reflected back to my journey, it was a enjoyable experience.

I don't know if it is possible to write a comprehensive How-to book for Dads on raising boys, but this one comes close as the principles I read in Way of the Wild Heart seem right on target. I grew up without a dad, but my mom was a faithful Christian who made sure we got to church every week. She also read her Bible daily and prayed with us (my brother, sister and me). God blessed me early on to know the principle that He is my real Father and I've almost always prayed to Him by the name of Father rather than calling Him God. This knowledge and understanding facilitated my maturity, just as the book states. He also brought committed Christian men into my life who fathered me in their own ways and softened the blow of being fatherless.I can truthfully state that not having a physical father on earth is the most difficult and painful thing I have ever endured. It is only through God's grace and my understanding of His relationship with me that I managed to overcome that missing part and still become a productive person. He led me to become a doctor and I practiced for 25 years as a family practitioner. I tried to use this gift as a platform to help my patients and to understand God's love for them when they faced difficult times. This book brought tears to my eyes many times with its truths as I read through it. I believe that God will bless this book in the hearts of many men. I am planning to get a group of guys together to go through the workbook/manual with me over the next few months. I am excited to see what stories will emerge and to hear how God revealed Himself as Father to other men and how they used this knowledge and understanding to help them throughout their lives. I'm quite sure I will also hear some tragic tales, but I expect at the end to have a closer bond with each man and a more clear idea of how to relate to my son and (hopefully someday) my grandson. My psychologist recommended this book as I discussed my life with her while trying to work through some problems and issues. I didn't even know she was a Christian. She hit the mark with this recommendation and I will be forever grateful.Dean Gafford

For some reason I thought this would be the historic story of Deadwood. Instead I got an insiders view of the production of the series which I saw as an absolute bonus. The book is a cross between a solid read and a coffee table 'dip into me' but most enjoyable. Unfortunately it does promise two TV movie length episodes that never came to fruition.

David Milch has to be the best television writer of all time. This book contains mostly insight from the creator himself but also the actors involved with what was television's finest hour. Also a lot of photography from the episodes and even letters from the 1800s from those who were there. This book also smells really good.

Was anyone ever described to you as "nice"? Scary isn't it. I am an ardent fan of Deadwood and a fan of David Milch. This book is a `nice' coffee-table addition that succeeds as a way of fondly recollecting the characters and singular moments of Deadwood. I was hoping for an extension and an amplification of Deadwood - more great Black Hill's tales from Milch's magic pen. In that respect, the book is disappointing. It does add some insight to the Deadwood stories, that is, the Deadwood teleplay and the process of making it. Milch eloquently adds some detail and color to the Deadwood story. Since the "Deadwood story" is his interpreted and interpolated history, the story is only really complete in Milch's imagination. Those of us who would love more will buy this book and savor the bits we can get. It is not enough though, but then, it could never be enough. The Deadwood actors also add detail and perspective in their own words. Milch's ability to blend the real actor's traits and skills with his visions of Deadwood is constantly recounted. The actors all seem to share their respect for Milch's stunning ability to shape the character to the actor and the actor from the character. Their introspections are interesting, but here again, too little and perhaps too hastily put together. In the end, I recommend the book as a memento of Deadwood, three seasons of good television. However, if you are searching for more Deadwood stories, this is not the place. I suspect the huckster in Milch couldn't resist one more retail opportunity; I certainly do not begrudge him a dime for all the great entertainment he has afforded me. Still, I'd love to see "Deadwood, the novel by David Milch", alas, I can only hope.

What makes a truly good story ? A group of complicated yet likeable characters who's lives are interwoven in the most extreme situations. That is what initially attracted me to watch 'Deadwood' the series and once I started watching (albeit 4 yrs after it was finished) I had been lassoed in and couldn't escape its grip. I ended up watching all three seasons in just on five weeks, but it did leave such an impression on me that I needed more and so I went in search of books. This book was an outstanding summary of the show and I wish I had had it while watching it. The book puts many of the events and relationships into perspective. I've always found the concept so intriguing about how communities, how organised society, could began from such a rough setting and grow into a town. `Deadwood' showed this in a more realistic way than had been portrayed before for life in 1880's. Those visions of the westerns of the 50's and 60's with John Wayne riding into a town with perfectly clean streets and horses all lined up in perfect rows (I always wondered as a kid why there was never any dune under those horses!!) were thrown out the proverbial saloon window. It delves into the psyche of each character, what they needed to do to survive in the community of `Deadwood'. This book is excellently presented, laid out according to character and themes, also explains the thoughts and personal traits of each character. The photographs are superb and capture the mood of the show perfectly. I think one of the greatest characters of modern TV featured in this show as the lead actor, based on an historical figure of the same name Al Swearengen (played by Ian McShane). Listening to his lines alone are worth their weight in Deadwood gold, as I'm sure many of the characters from the `Sopranos' would be shocked by his use of profanities. `Deadwood' was about how a community of people (all in search of their own glory during the gold rush era) came together and how systematic order began to follow such that people could co-exist in a somewhat civilised manner. It is the story about people fighting (mostly murdering) for what is theirs, handing out tough justice. But for all the violence which seemed prevalent at the time, if they followed a basic set of rules it was possible to co-exist and prosper together. One of the most telling sign of this was that Al Swearengen tried to have the wealthy Alma Garret killed early in the series, but by the end he risks his own life to save her. By this stage she had started up the first bank in Deadwood. Swearengen recognised that a bank was of course essential to any prosperous community and accepted she had earned her place there as well he did. The script was extremely well written using the language of the time and this book assists in understand much of the dialogue. I would thoroughly recommend this book as essential reading for fans of the show. This is another great production by HBO, both as a TV series and a compendium for the avid fan (I also have the book for the `Sopranos' which is another excellent book). My only regret is getting my hands on it after watching the entire series.

This book was everything I'd hoped for in a companion volume to a television show. Essays by creator David Milch on his thought processes behind the show, great photos - both of the show and of the real Deadwood and its inhabitants, and these great little sections where the actors take a couple pages to talk about what makes their characters tick. All of Deadwood's characters are complex people, so these glimpses of the actors' approach to how they played them was really interesting to me.I found this show to be one of the most captivating and compelling television programs I've ever seen, and this book was a great way to revisit it.

If you love the HBO series, "Deadwood", you will love this book written by the same person who produced the TV series; David Milch. It has an in depth look at the making of the series, his personal take on the characters, storylines, and the history behind it all.I recommend this nice book to have as an addition to your DVD series of the TV show.

Very informative. really helps with detailing the background to the box set's history and social context. not enough swear words though!

I miss Deadwood. This companion book is a great resource for the TV show. I've learned a lot about the show from it. Love it.
