I'm reading this weekly with my third grade students. I personally enjoy the story, but can't believe how much they're into it. I thought without pictures I'd be in for some trouble because this is my first time with a Kindle book on the projector. Yet, it works.Initially, I began reading the story with my booming stage voice to keep them interested, but I looked around and saw ten hands raised. I thought they were just going to bug me about getting water so they could get away so I ignored them for a bit. Then, one student blurted, "Can I read?" Well...sure. This continued until just about everyone in the room read a page.Now, I read first and the others read it after I've completed a few pages. They're really into it and learning some huge words at the same time. But I don't have to define too much so it works out.My class loves this.On a more personal note, I had no clue how much Dragon Ball ripped from Sun Wukong. I was amazed and thrilled to read it. It keeps me entertained with or without the kids. I get a little upset when they ask me a question while we're reading it.

Short read, of course, but a classic. Shepard's info at the back regarding his adaptation and the research that went into this version is interesting...perhaps as interesting as the tale itself. As he says, this is a condensation or just a part of the whole story (probably by 吴承恩), which is available to read, but this is certainly able to stand on its own. Great thing about these tales is that the hero doesn't always come out on top...or come out as a hero. There are lessons to learn, we just have to seek them out.

A great introductory book to the many fables of the Monkey King.It is fun. It is exciting. It is everything a little boy with special needs wanted.Not having any inkling of the Monkey King, this boy was introduced to its fables by word. Stories were told to him through memories and it is such a great feeling for him to actually have a book where his own mother could read and read again the fables.

This is a humorous retelling of a 16th century Chinese tale, or at least this is what we are told. Monkey is a kind of superman, but he doesn't seem all that bright. His parent was a magic stone, which being a stone could not talk and never gave him a name. He served as a king for some four hundred years but became bored and wanted a higher position. He went to learn with the Patriarch who taught him magic arts and made him immortal. Then he decided he wanted to be a god. His adventures are sometimes ridiculous but always funny and many readers will enjoy them.

The universally known stories in a culture have a profound and lasting influence in the mindset of growing children they are told to, and mark the continuity of tradition when repeated to their own children. This is true in every culture and this story is the ultimate in Chinese children stories. Not only does this story contain numerous character studies, conflicts and scenes that have entered into linguistic/world view idiom, but hidden inside this story are cryptic allusions to deep Buddhist and Taoist training. The full version of this story has 100 books and some authors have considered this story on par with such classics as the Tao-Te-Ching.This version is a good introduction to this story, the sort to give you a taste or to read to a child. I have a dozen versions of this story and while this is not my choice as the best short-popular version, it is close. Further, this author has released this text for the Kindle for 1 penny! This is the world's greatest bargain. Absolutely everyone should load this on their reader...As an aside...I hope that many like myself will purchase his dead tree version of the book and put it on their shelf, prove to publishers and Amazon that this is a good economic model. May many more authors release inexpensive e-book versions of texts as a promotion of their work. There is presently a vast quantity of high quality free audio books by authors trying to break in or grow their base, for traditionally published material. I regularly purchase texts that I have listened to or heard for free on the NPR Radio Reader program.I personally have been less than enthused with the universal $10 price for kindle books, the overall reading experience and utility is not the equivalent of a paper book. Given that 99.9% of the infrastructure costs such a printing, ink, paper, transport and warehousing are nonexistent for e-books, $10 is exorbitant. I generally feel that if the paper back version of a book is available for $15 compared to a $10 Kindle e-book, I would unhesitatingly go with paper.There is a lot of inexpensive e-book content "notably - Author 50-years-dead stuff" but much of the contemporary less than $5 content is barely spam. I hope that the Kindle consumer community will spot and recommend high quality inexpensive content; review and recommend it to others. Vote with your voice and and wallet (mouse-click) for this content to knock publishers of their high-horse...

As a westerner, I didn't grow up with Monkey and Journey to the West, only coming across it as an adult. It's a great story, though, and as fundamental to Chinese culture as the Grimm fairy tales are to Euro-American culture. I got this short book to read to my grandchildren so they wouldn't have to wait as long as I did to encounter this entertaining rascal.

Classic entertainment.If I'm not mistaken, this is adapted from 16th century Chinese lore. It's the preamble to Journey to the West - a super-bizarre, larger than life superhero story about a badass super-strength monkey (named Monkey - what up creativity?) with a several-ton staff that changes size at will.Anyone who's played the PS3 / 360 game Enslaved - it's a weirdly-adapted version of this story... kind of.This - and Aaron Shepard's entire series of culturally diverse children's story adoptions, are well worth a read.

It makes me want to read its source material, which I gather was its point. I've always been a bit of a mythology fan, and Asian mythology is a fascinating contrast to the Greek/Roman and Norse that I'm most familiar with. One star off for feeling somewhat incomplete, though I suppose that was part of the plan for getting me to read the original.

This is an advanced nursing text book and being that it is very specific so this is not a review of its content. So much of that depends on a course instructor and the individual student's interest in the subject matter. My issue is with the fact that so many Kindle editions of text books do not have page numbers, this one included. Anyone working at any academic level is aware of the importance of page numbers in first, following along with course content and second, producing authentic citations. I am afraid that I am going to have to abort my great experiment into digital text books this semester and exchange this and several other texts for their paper counterparts.

Nursing textbooks are typically dry and wordy. This one is different. The authors keep the subject interesting by using practical situations to illustrate EBP concepts. They make the subject easy to understand because they keep it simple. If you're looking for an EBP text that isn't overloaded with dreadful academia overspeak, try this one.

I absolutely despise this textbook. It is very repetitive and I believe it makes the subject overly complicated. The authors explain concepts in hundreds of words that could easily be explained in just a few. In addition, it reads as if much of the language is made up gibberish, as if the authors are inventing concepts and terminology to somehow elevate the material.

This was a book offered for my graduate level research class. It had been years since I had research in the BSN program. Unfortunately, I needed a review of terms that this book didn't offer. When I read something I didn't understand, I had to call my duaghter who had just finished a research class at the BSN level ad have her explain the parts of research I didn't understand. My daughter stated the book she had was by far more informative than the book I had. I wouldn't recommend this book at all.

I used this book for my schooling and it has been very helpful. I used it for one class and am using it again now to help with my practice inquiry project for my Doctor of Nursing program. Good book.

Just arrived in Tunis hoping that this book would get me through my week in Tunisia. For the past 48 hours, it has proven incredibly unhelpful and I just ordered the Lonely Planet guide via download PDF instead because I am desperate. This entire book does not even have a decent map of Tunis, leaving it completely up to me to figure out how to get from place to place. And, yet, it recommends that we walk to sites rather than taking a taxi. Additionally, the book does not make it clear what is the most interesting sites and the moderately interesting sites. After reading the book in an hour, I was not able to decipher which were the 2-3 must see sites. Although the book has pictures and a decent amount of background information, it is not a practical guide and certainly cannot be your only guide in the country. Buy this book if you never plan to travel to Tunisia and, instead, just want to learn about the country. Buy the Lonely Planet guide (or the Tunisia chapter of the Africa book) if you want practical information.

Very good guide with nice photos. Unfortunately out of date at 2005.

ok, but a bit out of date

Just came back from two weeks in Tunisia. As we had to go to Europe, we decided within a week to go to Tunisia and the only place I could get the book was from Amazon, but we were scare not to have it on time. We went all over Tunisia with OAT Travel. I showed the guide others places which were in the book and from that he detoured when he could do it. Without the book we will had missed a lot. As we travel a lot we have at least 27 books from DK Eyewitness Travel which we went to all those countries. Most of my books I use a marker to spot easier the places to see. We do not have too many places to see in the world, but I will never leave without those books. The Planet Books are very good too for places to eat and sleep.

Great intro to the culture of Tunisia and starting point for further research.

The DK Eyewitness Guide served as a wonderful resource during my recent trip to Tunisia. The photography was beautiful, The historical and cultural explanations were often more complete than that offered by my paid guide. It is easy to use and invaluable to anyone visiting. I'd highly recommend it.

Martin Pistorius was born in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1975. An unknown illness at the age of twelve left him wheelchair bound and unable to speak, and he spent fourteen years in institutions. In 2001 he learned to communicate via computer, make friends and change his life. In 2008 he met the love of his life, Joanna, and immigrated to the UK. I ordered this audible download and was very impressed. My husband had told me about him so I was interested in it. It made me laugh and cry. I liked how he could've been so angry at some of his family members but he wasn't. He understood them even though he had every reason to be upset. I have told several friends about it and I just laugh at some of the things he said. It isn't that I am laughing at him. I am laughing with him because he has a great sense of humor. I am sure that is what made his wife attracted to him.its a great book to make you appreciate what you have and will make you re-evaluate yourself for sure.

So many books are so poorly written that reading them is drudgery for me. I'm an avid reader, but I find myself putting quite a few books back on the shelf after the first few chapters. Mr. Pastorius grabbed my attention on page one and kept it through the acknowledgements at the end. I still can't stop thinking about him. I've been an RN for many years. This book made me question my attitude toward many patients who've been in my care. I'm kind and compassionate, for sure, but could I have missed something with some of my most debilitated patients? For at least one of them was there a keen intellect, hidden by a silent, twisted body? This book makes me wonder.

Martin's opening statement in a presentation he gave in the book captures the message of his book best. He states, "I would like you all to stop for a moment and really think about not having a voice or any means to communicate," my computer voice says. "You could never say, 'Pass the salt' or tell someone the really important things like 'I love you.' You can't tell someone that you're uncomfortable, cold, or in pain." Do you distinctly remember a time where you wanted to say something to a friend so badly, but you held it in? How about the time you raised your hand in class and wanted to be called on, but your teacher never called on you? These scenarios are just two specific examples of places where communicators are expected to be patient within the communicating world. The book, "Ghost Boy", is an autobiography written by Martin Pistorius from Johannesburg, South Africa. Martin did not have any help writing the book, he wrote it himself. At twelve years old, Martin developed an unknown illness that left him unable to speak, so he spent fourteen years without a voice, making him incapable of communicating with everyone surrounding him.The book is told in first person and goes into great detail about his life story and experience of being unable to communicate for several years. He goes into detail about the situations he was exposed to when he was unable to communicate within group homes, at home, and the thoughts that went through his head daily. He discusses how he went about receiving the AAC (Augmentative Alternative Communication) device, how he learned to use it, and how much it positively impacted his life. The way the story is portrayed from the viewpoint of Martin helps the reader understand exactly what was going through Martin's mind rather than someone putting words in his mouth. It personally helped me, as a reader, connect on a deeper level to not necessarily fully "understand" what he was going through, but instead "feel" the power, joy, and pain of all of his experiences through the use of the communication tools that he renewed over the years.One of my favorite quotes from the book states, "God and I didn't talk about the big things in life-we didn't engage in philosophical debates or argue about religion-but I talked to Him endlessly because I knew we shared something important. I didn't have proof that He existed, but I believed in Him anyway because I knew He was real. God did the same for me. Unlike people, He didn't need proof that I existed-He knew I did." Pistorius shows that he had a trust in God that was never instilled in him through anyone, but instead his trust in God is solely based on his own faith and one on one experience with God and all he has blessed him with.My other favorite takeaway from this book was the love story between Joanna and Martin. Not often do you hear of a love story as heartfelt as this one. Joanna loves Martin for who he is and all that he is capable of. The amount of strength the two of them have and the bond that they share is quite inspiring. Martin has struggled throughout his life with many different endeavors, but as he states "I've lived my whole life as a burden. She makes me feel weightless." The way Martin uses his words to describe a beautiful love story is nothing short of amazing.Pistorius makes it easy for readers who may not be familiar with AAC to follow along with the story line and understand what is going on. The main point to understand for readers that are unfamiliar with AAC is that Martin does not have any verbal language after the age of twelve. He is fully there cognitively and is aware of everything that is going on around him, he just cannot verbally communicate. He uses a device to help him communicate with others after he has an evaluation completed in the middle of the book. If you, as a reader, are looking for a book that will make you feel every emotion, I suggest you try reading "Ghost Boy." The storyline is easy to follow, and I would highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for an inspirational story within the field of Speech-Language Pathology.

I saw an article on Facebook about Martin and went right to Amazon to download the book. What a terrible thing, to be trapped in your own body, I had to know more. It's a great story, full of heartbreak and hope. The abuse is blood boiling and I wish the book addressed if there was any consequences to those disgusting people. It's frightening that such things can and do go on. Martin makes me aware of what a lazy ass I am. I haven't done half as much and I have none of the hurdles he has had.

This is the story about a man, who as a young boy, was overcome by a mysterious illness, and left in what the medical profession viewed as a vegetative state. Year after year, he just lay there, til at some point in his teens, awareness began dawning upon him, and consciousness arose. The problem is that he seemed unable to communicate this to anyone, until a sensitive caregiver noticed that to her he seemed sentient and did her best to persuade his parents that beneath his seeming immobility and inertia there was a sentient, aware human being and that there were ways of discovering this. His loving parents listened and took the gambit. From then on, he was given the tools that would enable him to communicate, allowing him to begin making himself heard and, eventually, completely change his life. His is an amazing journey of personal discovery, which he shares with the reader. It is a well-written and engaging first person account of a life recovered.

Rather than attempting to be a comprehensive, overbearing, 'cover to cover fix' for all teen problems, author Lucie Hemmen has chosen to focus in on 10 key problems teen girls face. The use of young adults to recount the things that did and didn't work for them paired with 'exercises' at the back work together to make a friendly tone that doesn't talk down to teens. As a parent, I found the book to be quite good. For my 12 year old, who is about transition into middle school from 6th grade, she found it useful to identify areas/issues that could become very problematic in coming years. The results of doing the CBT-themed exercises were surprising.The book breaks down into 10 'tips': Know what you bring to the party, Leave your comfort zone, Increase contact, Nurture connections, Weed out negative social habits, Communicate through conflict, Communicate for closeness, Be your best self in social media and texting, Be more and think less, Practice balance.All topics are rooted in CBT (cognitive behavior therapy): being mindful rather than instinctual as well as writing down thoughts/ideas. As such, there is a lot of 'extra' work in each chapter of actually writing things such as "positive thoughts today' or "qualities my friends like in me". Fortunately, they aren't daunting and written well to be interesting.Overall, the focus is on being confident and true to oneself as well as developing positive interpersonal skills (e.g., being involved and having great friends). This is more for your average teen girl rather than a very troubled one having issues with sex and drugs at a young age. It's more about building than fixing, in that respect.My daughter and I have read other CBT type books but I feel this one has a great balance of applicability to brevity. It doesn't try to cover too much and isn't so wordy that it talks down to teens. The author cleverly uses examples from older girls to make a lot of the points and then summarizes them to drive the points home. The exercises turn that information into direct applicability to each teen so the concepts are no longer general or nebulous.In all, both my daughter and I found the book to be very helpful and useful. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

I got this for my niece before she enters her freshmen year of high school. She's had some issues with two-faced friends and really enjoyed the book and it's perspective.

Would recommend for pre teen girls

Gift for a shy young lady who just turned 13. She appreciated it.

I think this book is more for high school girls. I bought it for my 12 year old granddaughter and I think it may be a little over her head at this point. Oh well, if she reads it now, she'll be well prepared for high school.

Using for my Girl Scouts so far so good
