I can't tell you how many times during this set of books I found myself holding my breath, quite literally. (May even have turned a nice shade of azure)This series starts off with a bang as the two friends Wulf Rome and Quyloc are sent by King Rix on a mission destined to fail, to fight a massively overwhelming army and are driven into what is possibly the most dangerous piece of land anywhere… The Gur al Krin desert, where searing sands are the least of their troubles.The duo find themselves in the middle of the Krin in a deep place they’d rather not be and just being there might lead to the worst decision ever.Then there is Netra, a young Tender from Rane Haven who is just discovering who she is and how to manage her budding powers. This part of the story has a tidal feel to the emotional tumult throughout, but also has some good action to balance it out.This pentalogy deserves 5 stars, two thumbs up, a fanatics dance of merriment and all the praise I can muster…and a bag of chips (as the cool kids say) It’s blend of action, mayhem, interpersonal connections and raw emotion (had me crying like a baby in its crib) made for a potent cocktail that still has me reeling from the ‘whoa’ effect.I absolutely LOVE the imagery in this book, especially with the creatures. It’s as if they were painted directly into my brain! (don’t worry, it doesn’t hurt) So that goes a long way in transporting you right into the story.Eric T. Knight does something amazing in these books, in that even though you are reading them for the first time it feels like coming back to an old friend you haven’t seen in years and at the same time, packs the wonder and awe of a brand new adventure and all the mystery that entails, making it what I consider to be an instant classic that will endure for generations to come. And that's really just the first book I'm talking about, it gets BETTER!I need to take a minute to talk about the magic system he uses, because it's freakin' awesome and completely unique! As a fantasy fan I have honestly NEVER seen it’s like. Things like Lifesong, Selfsong, Akirma, Flows and going "beyond" have totally blown me away! The way he has taken fantasy and turned it upside down with his use of the above mentioned things is through originality and an obviously bottomless imagination!Eric T. Knight is a literary master Chef, knowing exactly the right ingredients to give you a five course gut busting meal that will leave you both extremely satisfied and wanting more.So between a crazy unique magic system, characters that I feel like I personally know now (don't worry about how many 'real' friends I have) unparalleled action and an amazing sense of humor throughout (seriously I laughed out loud so many times while reading this, I'm pretty sure my family thinks I may be a little psychotic. (my mental health is fine. The voices told me so) you can’t help but love these stories.Knight ends this EPIC 5 pack with Oblivion's Grasp and it is without a doubt the jewel in the crown of the Immortality and Chaos series and that means quite a bit, since I truly adore every page of every book in this set.I've honestly never read a series that can bring to life such realistic and wonderful characters as this one does. In it Eric T. Knight has fashioned heroes that are truly afraid of what could happen but they use that fear to push forward and that lends them a realism that most fantasy stories lack.Grab a copy and I'll see you on the other side of the veil.

The initial characters are shallow and you have no empathy for any of them. For a general, Rome comes off as a complete rookie - no decision making or intelligence. Netra is a bit better but is still one-dimensional.The religious magic system reminds me a bit of the dream world in wheel of time. Indeed, the whole evil god breaking out of prison and the early release of his minions seems mighty similar as well.I’m not understanding how other reviewers gave this 5 stars.

This wasn't one of my favorite series. Without spoiling the plot, it seemed like a whole section of the series was about a group that was only marginally connected to the story line, had a completely different resolution to their problem, and the final meeting of the two protagonists was almost an afterthought in the epilogue. Too many plot developments were encumbered by peripheral entities claiming "we can't interfere".I found myself about halfway through the books debating whether to abandon the series or finish it to see if it got better toward the end. The end was partially satisfying but I found myself wondering how some relationships ended, how the characters resolved their actions, and what happened with some major influencing entities. I don't know if this was in preparation for a continuation story, but I won't continue with the series to find out.

Too many of the 'good guys' were morally compromised by a 'the end justifies the means' mentality , and as a result their behavior was almost as bad as the evil monsters. I am pretty sure that some epiphany was coming that would enlighten them as to how far they had compromised their beliefs, but I am just too fed up with the annoying and self-serving justifications, to hang around for it. And they were cruel to animal. which even in fiction is a complete deal breaker for me.

I think the author's writing style improved greatly in his Chaos and Retribution series (which I read before I knew about Immortality and Chaos: The Complete Epic Pentalogy). This set is giving me a better idea of the background and the history/personality of some of the main characters in his Chaos and Retribution series. The reason that I like the author's next series better is that Eric Knight spends more time on the personalities of his main characters without decreasing the action packed events in the books. So, if you loved this set, I think that you'll love the continuation of the Qarath world even more in the Chaos and Retribution series

This is an epic story about surviving when the odds are stacked against you. It is a story of magic and mystery of kings and soldiers, of good and evil, life versus death.This is a story of ancient gods and their creation called Life and Lifesong. And the Selfsong that inhabits every living creature. A story of how it was all very nearly destroyed. It is a story full of action/adventure and of undying love."Immortality and Chaos" is a great story that could be turned into a feature length film or a tv mini series. I would absolutely watch if it ever were.Great book series!!!

I've been reading this at night for the past month, and cannot wait to finsh it. I'm on the final straight, and let me tell you, I can't wait to see how it finishes.The plot take a while to get going, but this is purely because of the complexities involved in the storyline. Once the foundation is laid, the story picks up speed and hurtles toward the finish. The characters are well defined and the world around them detailed, and I had no problem picturing the story in my mind. The author must have had loads of fun taking the reader from one spot to another, and I love how I am taken from one character to the next over the chapters, inexorably drawn toward the finish line - not knowing what the end result is going to be!Overall then, well written, very detailed plot, and had me spellbound. I'm very glad I decided to read past the first few chapters, as this gem ihas been well worth my time.

This is a very helpful book for anyone who is leading in their church. It has tips and suggestions of how to lead without being bossy or being too passive. Very good purchase.

I would recommend this book to any pastor or ministry leader as a biblical basis for how to lead in that context. The truths discussed pertain to pretty much all leadership situations, but are especially true for spiritual leaders. Would be great for leaders of “corporate“ churches to read as we are responsible for the health of the flock and not only the size.

If Yoda was a pastor, he'd sound like Larry Osborne. Packed full of wisdom for church leaders. A must read for young ministers and elders. Larry explains so well how to navigate the very real challenges of leadership within the church. I've served in ministry for 25 years, and this book is one of the best that describes the journey of a shepherding leader.

However seeing them so artfully, elegantly, and dare I say simply arranged, is nothing short of inspiring!I am a passionate gardner with a library full of gardening books, most of which have little practical growing advice. However, Martha's Flowers is filled with insightful gardening advice from which even a seasoned gardener may learn something new. If only I had this book when I started gardening, so many plant lives could have been saved!As a gardener, one of my greatest pleasures is tip toeing through my garden, gin and tonic in one hand and my secateurs in the other, gathering flowers for the house. In this I admit I am insanely envious of the talented Mr. Kevin Sharkey given carte blanche in Martha's gorgeous gardens, lucky duck!Unfortunately I don't have the space to gush over every single arrangement as I'd like, I will say that I have gleaned numerous fabulous ideas for my future flower arrangements. And happily expanded my gardening 'chores' with this creative book. For I simply must plant a few single petal roses for that glorious contrast in my rose arrangements, order love lies bleeding seeds, wrap my porch post with wire for my clematis as Martha does her granite posts, ect.I cannot imagine a gardener or flower lover who wouldn't adore this book! I can say the too few photos of Martha's gorgeous gardens are a bit of a tease, and I implore this talented duo to begin as soon as possible on the next book which must be 'Martha's Gardens', pretty please!Thank you Martha, thank you Kevin, for seeing my snow laden gardeners soul through to spring!

The author even has a disclaimer that the book is for "entertainment purposes only." Really? Accounting? Entertainment? You've got to be kidding.

I always enjoy this author, he is very thorough and has a great insight of the business.

I thought this book would be geared towards accountants but it's not. I highly recommend this book for anyone who owns or is starting a business of any size. He breaks down everything you need to track your finances accurately and explains all terms very clearly. There are FAR, FAR, FAR better books than this if you want to explore meditation. Sam is no expert by a LONG shot. I didn't even finish reading it. I've read 100's of books on Buddhism, eastern thought and meditation - it's not that this one doesn't cover the basics I guess - it's just that you can find so much better information from far better qualified teachers than Sam Harris.

What a great book. I was born and grew up in Theravada Buddhist family. Even as a teenager I saw the value in the 4 Noble truths. But I couldn't quite come to grips with the idea of Reincarnation & the Law of Karma. That sounded like a " Celestial Accounting System that worked on Auto Pilot". To me that seems as nonsensical as the "Old Man in the Sky" offered by Abrahamic religions.Especially when as a young Buddhist one of the first things I remember learning is Buddha's admonishment to "Never believe in Dogma. But to sift all teachings(including his) through your own experiential filter. Then if it it still seems valid to try it on". When you just take that teaching into heart and try on the concepts Karma & Reincarnation; it makes the 8 fold noble path a moot point.But Sam Harris brings a new perspective. Damn You Sam Harris! your arguments takes away my excuses for staying away from the meditation cushion.It is a pretty dense subject matter. With a chapter on Consciousness and another one on Self. While some of it was new and interesting, other ideas might take 2nd or 3rd reading to get through my thick skull.I think every Buddhist should read and consider what is laid out here. I highly recommend to anyone who has a intellectual curiosity about spirituality. Yet from my experience I know that only few of the most ardently spiritual would dare to tackle it. Between Sam Harris and Stephen Batchelor's writing they extend the Buddhas admonishment for experiential learning by applying 21st century rationality to the inquiry. These two writers and their writing gives a good intellectual foundation to wade into spirituality with healthy dose of 21st century agnosticism.

Here's one of the many examples that Sam Harris uses throughout this book regarding consciousness: Suppose you're going to Mars via a teleport machine. Many of your friends have already done this safely and are already on Mars. But what the creator of this teleport machine doesn't tell you is your whole being down to every last atom is copied and reconstructed on Mars. The "copy" has all your memories, your appearance, etc, and is essentially you. Then your body on Earth is vaporized painlessly in a split second. To ensure safety, the reconstruction must be finished before vaporization. This poses a few interesting points about consciousness. Because reconstruction must be finished first, does that mean there are two conscious people that are considered you? If you can be reconstructed by a machine, what does this say about consciousness? Is conscious defined by physical continuity or physiological continuity, as with the teleport machine? If you knew how this teleport machine actually worked, would you still do it?All these questions and more are posed to the reader, than Sam Harris explains his views on it via science and logic. I found his arguments sound and in my opinion hard to argue against. Sam Harris is a neurosurgeon and a non-religious spiritual teacher, so he has plenty of experiences to answer these deep questions.I cannot recommend this book enough. I also suggest listening to his podcast "Waking Up".

I normally am not a person having much interest in things of a spiritual nature, but I decided to read this book on the recommendation of a friend. Actually, as I learned, spirituality does not have to have anything to do with religion. You can have a “spiritual experience” without any religious overtones. In fact, the word spirit comes from a Latin word which is a translation of a Greek word that means “breath.” It was around the thirteenth century that the term became entangled with beliefs about immaterial souls, the supernatural, and ghosts. We note that Christians, Muslims, Hindus and others can experience something spiritual in regards to their religions. The author indicates that because their beliefs are incompatible with one another, the spiritual component must emanate from a deeper principle.According to the author, this book is “an introduction to the brain, a manual of contemplative instruction, and a philosophical unraveling of what most people consider to be the center of their inner lives: the feeling of self we call “I.” There is a deeper principle at work – that the feeling of “I” or “self” is an illusion. The author uses his personal experience to help readers see the nature of their own minds in a new light. We are shown that a rational approach to spirituality seems to be what’s missing from secularism and the lives of most people. The author has spent considerable time seeking experiences of the kind that gave rise to the world’s religions. For example, he notes that he spent two years on a silent retreat in increments of one week to two months practicing different types of meditation for up to eighteen hours per day. That’s determination!We are introduced to a concept called mindfulness. Facilitating this state may involve a technique called vipassana (meaning insight), or consolation of the Satipatthana Sutta (an empirical guide to freeing the mind from suffering). No worry, we are provided with some instructions from the author on how to meditate properly. In life, we grasp at transitory pleasures, we worry about the future – life is stressful. The “spiritual life” promoted by the author is a solution to bringing this stress to an end. He starts by investigating the nature of consciousness and shows us that by transforming its contents through deliberate training we can achieve the basis of spiritual life.We our next introduced to a more detailed discussion of “self.” He tries to convince us that this sense of self is just an illusion and that spirituality consists of realizing this moment to moment. He supports this notion by showing that nothing a Christian, Muslim, or Hindu can experience constitutes evidence in support of their belief whether it be ecstasy, bliss, inner-light, or whatever. It is because their beliefs are logically incompatible with one another. In the book, we see that the illusion of the self can be investigated and dispelled. Harris shows how he reached his conclusion through much meditative practice with various “gurus,” and Dzogchen masters. More support for his views comes from a discussion of near-death experiences and drug use.The author concludes: “Until we can talk about spirituality in rational terms – acknowledging the validity of self-transcendence – our world will remain shattered by dogmatism. This book has been my attempt to begin such a conversation.”
