"A superb account of how a controversial technology becomes normalized patient by patient. While following families from newborn screening to post-Cochlear implant, Laura Mauldin shows that little of the political turmoil related to this medical technology is salient for the parents faced with a child with hearing loss."—Stefan Timmermans, University of California, Los Angeles"Dr Mauldin is a talented writer who offers keen insight in several areas where practitioners can improve."—Journal of Deaf Studies and Deaf Education

#130,985 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I'm deaf and I work within the Early Hearing Detection and Intervention system. This book was by far the most illuminating narrative I've read about how families of children that are deaf or hard of hearing born today are immediately put on a track for oral/aural and auditory habilitation and presumed cochlear implantation. Not only did this book describe the process parents undergo (yes, one downside was the small and limited number of families that were followed for this book), but Mauldin most importantly helped me understand the socio-cultural and medical narrative perspectives of deafness and essentially why there is such a divide in the long-battled positions of proponents of oralism and those of a Deaf identity and use of American Sign Language (ASL). I like how Mauldin clearly outlines her biases upfront and describes her structured and anthropology-based approach in documenting and capturing this unique cross-section of how modern medicine and technology interacts with both mainstreamed and minority cultures. A must read for anyone in the EHDI field, Universal Newborn Hearing Screening state programs, Audiologists, Speech and Language Pathologists, Deaf Educators and parents alike.

This book has really helped to open my eyes to the perspective of members of the Deaf culture about cochlear implants and the decision to implant very young children. The CI industry may not have been as altruistic as hearing people might think. The industry is just that and is very profitable. Professionals really need to be supportive of family's decision making on implantation. Reading this book has helped me to see this more clearly.I still support implantation for children, but there is lots of things that families need to consider and they should be supported with being fully educated on the pros and cons of ASL and oralism. One is not THE answer, in my opinion.

This book is a great resource for people who are familiar or unfamiliar with the competing narratives of deafness: the medical narrative to support the need for a miracle cure and the socio-cultural narrative that emphasizes the linguistic and cultural rights of the Deaf community. The author did a wonderful job in summarizing the complicated narratives in her introduction, but she made an important (and controversial) point that the readers should take note: both narratives reject disability as one attribute that falls out of the acceptable range of human diversity. The medical narrative may make sense in this case since the goal is to rehabilitate people and bring them closer to the norm; but with the socio-cultural narrative, deafness is seen as part of human diversity but not as a disability since deaf people have a community, a history, and a language in order to function as human beings. The socio-cultural narrative is useful for the Deaf community to frame their reality this way so they can maintain their culture and language against the oppressive nature of audism, but by rejecting their connection with disability, it does very little to support the reality that disability studies scholars, activists, advocates, and allies involved in the disability rights movement have been pushing for decades: that disability is also part of human diversity and that the society must end its oppression and discrimination of people with disabilities. This is especially important because about 90% of deaf and hard of hearing people with or without additional disabilities were born to hearing families (meaning family members who are not deaf and not familiar with sign language and Deaf culture) and the majority of these families typically do not question the ableist ideology that having a disability (including deafness) make their children different (read: not normal) and they must do something about it. This is what the book is about: hearing parents who unexpectedly bear deaf children who are not like them and they need support and guidance from people who supposedly know best - the medical professionals on hearing loss and speech and hearing rehabilitation. What I appreciate about this book that the author doesn't put anyone in a negative light or paint the medical professionals as the enemies of the Deaf community. Everyone in the book seem to be sincere in their attempts to provide the best future for deaf children. What the author is trying to point out is that the ideological intersection of gender-specific parenthood, ableism, medicalization, and technology defines what it means to be "normal"; it explains why people do the way they are doing when it comes to children with their hearing abilities that do not fit with the norm. The book does contain its limitations as the author discusses in her introduction: it follows a small number of families and all of the medical staff in the book are at one medical center in New York City. It may not represent the majority of the families in the rest of the country and the world, but it offers useful and honest insights on the reality that the families and their deaf children with cochlear implants are going through today.

I highly recommend this book as someone who was deafened at 2 from an illness, raised oral, using sign language in a school for deaf, attending mainstream, schools as the only deaf person without any formal support services, attending universities and finally using access services. I'm a profoundly deaf whom hearing aids were of no use and currently use a cochlear implant. I'm also fluent in ASL as a fifth language and I'm a foreign born but my deafness didn't prevent me from mastering English as a foreign language. I find it sad about division between oral and signing cultures and feel that everyone needs to get along. As a deaf adult, I believe in using all communication options whenever possible and not limiting to just one.

An absorbing view of people regarding cochlear implants for children, their mindsets, goals and hopes. It challenges the medical viewpoint that a cochlear implant is a standard treatment for deafness, because it is much more complicated than that. As no two individuals are alike, nor are their families, the results of CI surgery are variable. To be taken into consideration are the expectations of the parents, their social environment and preconceptions, their inner feelings of guilt and acceptance, and their reasonings for subjecting their children to surgery. Since nothing is guaranteed in any major decision concerning children, well-informed parents need to also examine their motivations and weigh their options as well as that of their children. Also examined are the preconceptions of society in general as well as those of doctors.

It's been about two years since I published a book review about online or social media marketing. Generally, while many friends have had their turn at the plate and I know their books have great helpful ideas and content, there tenants have had an element of redundancy, and I could not finish them (and I only review if I've read half of the book).Greg Verdino`s microMARKETING offers a different experience with new, refreshing looks at online communications. In my mind, while it offers many of the tenants his contemporaries espouse, the book has new, exciting approaches and tenants. I actually found the book's style and approaches (do many small things well and Greg's view of earned media) inspiring, and caused me to rethink a couple of my own projects.Case in point, the 7th Son case study in Chapter Eight was just fantastic. As someone who has published business book with a second in the works, but also has two novels almost contracted with publishers I could not help but absorb every detail. The case study made me resolve to re-edit one of the novels, and publish it independently (gasp) using social tools to promote. This book is full of case studies like that, from Laura Luke and Sephora to the Dancing Man, as well as few social media mainstays that you'll be familiar with. In addition, the book offers seven principles of microMARKETING that are well explained and a series of questions in the final chapter to turn the quick read into a learning lesson for your organization.I tend to lock onto great sound bites, and this one resonated so well with me, you can expect to see it in Welcome to the Fifth Estate (location 1172 on Kindle):"All this creates a new marketing imperative and demands a new media model. When a company attempts to interrupt the stream, the stream is bound to shift course, or simply flow around the interruption. But if a brand can actually become part of the stream, it will be carried along in the flow itself."I highly recommend microMARKETING not just for those looking to begin their journey, but for those of us who have seen a few rodeos in their time.

DISCLOSURE: I don't currently work with Greg but think he's a swell fellow.Great premise, great book. This isn't just another business book. It's not about the framework that will solve all your challenges or the latest and greatest business process. It's about building your business through the very real and very human actions that make great businesses tick. It's about the humanity that drives the world that is social business.Greg is a prolific blogger and a fantastic presenter and it shows. Easy to read, featuring refreshingly new and human case studies, this is a must read for anyone sick of the same old talking points and ready for inspiration.

Excellent information, very helpful in my own marketing of my independently published books. I recommend reading it to anyone selling most anything. Beth Copeland: most recent book--Does He Drink too Much? (available on Amazon).

DISCLOSURE - I've worked with Greg Verdino for 2 years, when we were crayon and now as Powered, Inc.Any marketer interested in applying social media strategy and tactics to their business needs to read this book. Greg walks you through case studies (not the usual ones that people overshare) grouped around intelligent insights that illustrate how regular people and Fortune100 companies have made big business from microMarketing. It's a pretty quick read, but full of value (think 37signal's Rework for marketers) that I think people will revisit again and again.

If you were to buy a business book based on your ambitions, you might never get to one with the word "micro" in it because it came across as a small idea. The big idea of Greg Verdino's book, however, comes by virtue of the simple insight that big things happen when you know how to put the right small things together. Unlike many business books written by professional speakers, Greg's background comes as a VP at a large agency running strategic social media campaigns on behalf of clients ... in other words, he has street cred. And while many of the social media examples in microMARKETING might be familiar to the uber-geeky social media mavens in the audience - for most readers the examples he shares will help to cement the concept behind the book. Ultimately, you will learn how to use the elusive technique of creating "microcontent" to engage your audiences and stand out. (This review was originally published on the Influential Marketing Blog as part of the "30 Second Book Reviews" feature).

DISCLOSURE: I was the indexer for this book, but this review is unsolicited by the author. I do regular write-ups/reviews of my book projects on my blog once a month.Micromarketing is a real must-have for anyone who wants to integrate their marketing ideas into the new virtual, niche world we all live in. I'm keeping my copy to help me market some personal poetry and essay stuff I'm doing. The mass market simply doesn't exist as a usable target, which is good for us little guys. The idea is to recruit social networking folks (called "micromavens") and basically take word-of-mouth to a whole new level of impact. Viral is the operational goal for any new product or service, but you better provide value, because your ongoing relationships with your mavens and through them the rest of your prospective clientele, depend on it. But you don't need a huge advertising budget (in fact ads are a bit outre in this world) to create success. It's pretty amazing. Power to the micros! Verdino has a very straightforward and engaging style for explaining his ideas, with lots of real/virtual-world examples to illustrate. And I've already printed out the last chapter, which is a fill-in-the-blank checklist to use in developing my own micromarketing campaign.

Dagger John: Archbishop John Hughes and the Making of Irish America, by John Loughery

Review

"A comprehensive, insightful, and robust biography of a transcendent but neglected figure." (The New York Times)"Mr. Loughery deftly narrates a life spent in defense of immigrants and as an imperfect advocate for tolerance and, yes, diversity." (Wall Street Journal)"A timely insight into the man who founded [St. Patrick’s] cathedral, providing a fascinating glimpse of the world of Irish America in the 19th century." (The Irish Times)"Loughery not only handles the historical record prudently but also mines the data of the life and times of Hughes with verve and just enough detail to keep the reader moving eagerly forward to the next chapter." (America Magazine)"Loughery's work deftly portrays a key period in U.S. history and the role of one of the figures who helped to define that era." (Library Journal)"In this superb biography by Loughery, Hughes takes his place among the movers and shakers of 19th century New York City." (The Bowery Boys)"Excellent." (Catholic New York)"Loughery has convincingly painted a portrait of both Catholic New York as well as the larger American culture of the mid-nineteenth century, while also weaving into his tapestry the strengths and weaknesses, triumphs and failures, of the prelate who led the archdiocese for over two decades.... Dagger John is a considerable contribution to United States Catholic history, the role of the Irish in it, and the character of one who never shied from controversy." (Catholic Historical Review)"As the archbishop of the nation's largest city, John Hughes was a controversial figure known for his intensity and his willingness to pick a political fight. Dagger John puts Hughes squarely in the middle of the political, social, and ecclesiastical context of his times. The result is an engagingly written and fair appraisal of the feisty archbishop." (Thomas J. Shelley, author of Fordham: A History of the Jesuit University of New York, 1841–2003)"This delightfully written book introduces the transformational Catholic figure, John Hughes. John Loughery's astute analysis and adept storytelling conjure not just the extraordinary man himself but the boisterous social and political worlds through which he moved. Anyone who wants to understand the place of the Irish in nineteenth-century America must read Dagger John." (Catherine O’Donnell, author of Elizabeth Seton: A Life)

I am a graduate of Fordham College - Rose Hill and am thus perhaps not the most dispassionate reviewer, but I thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommend this terrific biography of John Hughes. Hughes’ life is as remarkable a rags-to-robes story as one is likely to find. A young man of no particular scholastic inclination or accomplishment who nevertheless employed his instinctive people skills and, to borrow a wonderful word from another milieu, chutzpah, to become the preeminent Catholic prelate in America at a time when the church was under attack from every conceivable quarter, Hughes just happened to be the right man at the right time. The founder of what is now Fordham University (nee, St. John’s College) and both the spiritual and temporal father of St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Hughes was a man to be reckoned with. But his considerable accomplishments came with a self-created stiff price. He was sufficiently difficult to deal with that the sign of the cross with which he accompanied his signature was interpreted by some as the dagger of the title. And it was no oversight that his life of service to the church was not rewarded with a cardinal’s cassock and ring; Rome quite frequently thought of him as much a liability as a blessing. But there is no question that he did more to advance the cause of the church, and especially its Irish adherents, in the nineteenth century (and beyond) than any other Catholic prelate. Finally, Author Loughery is the perfect teller of this tale, combining as he does both a deft writing hand and a congenital sensitivity for his subject matter. Excellent story well told.

Good history of the obstacles and threats that Catholics had to endure in antebellum New York. A story of the journey of an Irish immigrant from laborer to Archbishop of New York. Relevant today when considering nativism and immigration. Insight into the negative effects of Dagger John's battles, as well as his accomplishments.

Entertaining as well as informative. The book gave a great overview of the times in which Hughes lived in addition to the biographical material. Prior to reading Dagger John, I had had a poor imagine of the bishop. Loughery gave me a clearer view, showing that John Hughes was an industrious and ambitious man who raised himself out of poverty to become a true American. Two thumbs up!!!

This lengthy history of the establishment of the Catholic Church and school system in New York City manages to both inform and entertain. I found it to be a page turner and timely at that. Hughes, though he amassed great power and social standing, was a flawed human being. On the one hand, he fought hard for the Irish poor of New York in the mid 19th Century; he established schools, set up social services, hospitals--was close to the people, understood their needs. On the other hand, he courted the privileged society--Lincoln, Congress, traveled the Continent with the rich, had his own prejudices, including being anti-abolitionist. Yet he understood the needs of the people of New York and worked tirelessly for them. I believe he was a shepherd. Dagger John also illuminates the incredible tensions between the more established Protestants and the newly arrived Catholic poor. I would have liked more access to John Hughes' sermons and writings--more primary sources, more insights into the psyche of the man.

I liked the insight the author had into the struggles the desperate Irish masses had to endure in the mid-eighteenth century in New York and the strength Hughes had to help them in a very hostile environment. What I disliked was the abundance of too many related stories. Very well worth reading for anyone - especially a fan of New York City history of the struggles of the Irish - the first massive wave on immigrants into the City.

arrived on time. Great biography and history

I am preparing to start my CPA exam, and since I've been out of school for a while, I thought it would be good to start with this before I actually take my review course. I like how easily the chapters are to read and how I can jump between chapters. Also, I do like that the answer key has a small explanation as to why that is the correct answer. Overall I do like it a lot. Again, this will not be my only form of study, this is more of a warm up to get me use to focusing and studying again.

Great for making a study plan but be cautious that this is from 2014

Information found in book is great. However, bought it too close to the change in exam structure , so some of the info is irrelevant to the new 2017 exam, and did not get a discount for it being so close to change.

Seems very well organized and good refresher for those who have been out of school a while.

Excellent gift for family member preparing for CPA exam.

Good

I bought this book for my niece who is in the process of taking her CPA exam. It was really informative and helpful preparing her for the test.

It have some info but not enough to help you pass the exam.

Keeping Your Kids on God's Side: 40 Conversations to Help Them Build a Lasting Faith, by Natasha Crain

Review

"I consider Keeping Your Kids on God's Side to be an important, eye-opening 'gateway' book. Natasha has done a wonderful job of quickly introducing the important issues and evidences from the perspective of a parent. She's engaging, thoughtful, and she knows how to throw the ball so you can catch it. Let Keeping Your Kids on God's Side serve as an introduction to the most important work you will ever do as a parent." —J. Warner Wallace, author of Cold-Case Christianity and God's Crime Scene, international speaker, professor at Biola University"I almost wish my children were young again so I could use Natasha Crain's book with them. Through her parenting blog, Crain has access to the most important questions and challenges parents are hearing from their children today. She writes in strong, vigorous prose and does a great job of pitching her answers at a level that parents can understand—and, even more importantly, that they can use." —Nancy Pearcey, author of Total Truth and Finding Truth, apologetics professor, Houston Baptist University"Keeping Your Kids on God's Side is a timely and much-needed book. Natasha provides a road map so parents feel equipped to have the critical (and difficult) faith conversations with their kids. If you want to see your kids have a vibrant faith, then get this book and start having these conversations with your kids today!" —Sean McDowell, author of more than 15 books, including A New Kind of Apologist, international speaker, professor at Biola University"Keeping Your Kids on God's Side is an outstanding resource every Christian parent should have in their home library...this book is the most accessible, non-intimidating treatment of key apologetics issues I've seen to date, and I will be recommending it to every parent I encounter!" —Melissa Cain Travis, Assistant Professor of Apologetics, Houston Baptist University, author of Young Defenders series of apologetics books for kids"Parents, wake up. The secular culture is challenging our kids like never before and we've got to prepare them for the barrage of false ideas they will most certainly face. Apologetic conversations are no longer optional; they're a necessary part of our kids' discipleship. Thankfully, Keeping Your Kids on God's Side is the resource we all need. It's accessible and comprehensive, and it will equip you to engage your kids in conversations that count, big time." —Brett Kunkle, Student Impact Director, Stand to Reason"Many well-intentioned, godly parents unknowingly send their children out into the world malnourished by an insufficient diet of evidence for their faith...We know. Ratio Christi sees it every day in our chapters on high school and college campuses. Students come to us starving for ways to defend their faith from intellectual assault. As the director of parent outreach at Ratio Christi, I've been looking for a tool to recommend to parents so they can start this training early at home. This is it. Start feeding your family a steady diet of Keeping Your Kids on God's Side to strengthen their hearts and minds for the battles against the secular smorgasbord they will face." —Julie Loos, Director, Ratio Christi Boosters"As a youth pastor, I'm thrilled to see an apologetics book written with parents in mind! It is not a matter of if your children or students will encounter arguments against Christianity, but when. Questions will come, and when they do, where will your kids find answers? The Internet? Their college professors? Atheist friends? We need to take responsibility to equip ourselves to be that resource...this book will help you do just that!" —Patrick Brown, Student Ministries Director, Whitehaven Road Baptist Church"As a pastor over family ministries, I am very excited about this book! It answers many of the strong objections against Christianity in amazing depth, yet in such a clear manner that even someone new to apologetics can easily understand it." —Jared Novak, Family Pastor, New Life Church Bonita Springs

Clearly the reviewer who gave one star to this book did not read it. Apply his assertion to any other thing a human learns...math, language, ANY worldview, etc. and it is just as illogical as it is when discussing reason-based faith. If a Christ-loving/following parent hopes their children will choose the same life, there must be discussions had about the validity/evidence of and for the faith. This doesn't happen due to growing up in proximity to a believing parent. Neither does a child learn anything (at least not properly) without direct and coherent conversation and explanation."Trust"ing a child to figure out the biggest question in life with zero guidance (which nobody does btw, not even the most liberal of parents) is unloving at best and cruel withholding at worst. Would you do that about sex, finances, marriage, children? I doubt it. You would avail them of what knowledge you have and THEN let them make up their mind.If a parent believes in a literal hell and that we are deeply sinful creatures with a true enemy bent on our utter destruction, how much do they have to hate their child not to tell them? This book is laid out in a totally easy-to-understand way and is quite comprehensive in terms of scientific evidence, understanding logic and atheistic claims and teaching our kids to think critically. I have read a fair amount of apologetics literature, it is compiled well in Natasha's book along with her invaluable experience; "on the job training" as a mother and research.

Apologetics is a discipline that has been written about quite extensively. There have been volumes written with special emphasis given to logic, natural theology, historical arguments, and practically any specialized area someone can think of. However, how one goes about explaining tough apologetic and theological matters to their children is something I have not seen covered. At least, not until I read Natasha Crain’s Keeping Your Kids on God’s Side. Natasha’s new book which releases today from Harvest House is laid out in a way that will be especially helpful to parents and also those wanting to know about how to answer general as well as specific questions about the Christian faith.Natasha Crain, for those who may be unfamiliar with her work, runs a fantastic blog for parents, Christian Mom Thoughts. A lot of ideas and conversations from her website has fueled this book which is another unique aspect of the book as she uses blog comments and readers emails to give different perspectives on topics, whether it is a parent who is just starting to teach their kid about Christianity or a skeptic who claims that Jesus never existed and there is no proof (see Part 3 of the book for Natasha’s very good answers to that ridiculous claim). The book is laid out in a very helpful way where people can navigate different topics without reading the book cover to cover; though, I recommend you do as it is an enjoyable read. One thing that makes the book very easy to read and doesn’t cause the book to come across as a dry, purely intellectual read is Natasha and her family’s life experiences and how they go about discussing questions with their children. She gives examples on questions her kids have asked and how they have answered. She also talks about the importance of setting aside time during the week to answer your kids’ questions. The book itself is laid out in five parts, with eight chapters in each part.1. Conversations about God2. Conversations about Truth and Worldview3. Conversations about Jesus4. Conversations about the Bible5. Conversations about ScienceEach chapter is about 5-10 pages in length so if the concepts are new to you as a parent, Natasha provides a really good overview of each chapter topic. For example, in the first chapter Natasha writes about the evidence for God and while the arguments are not exhaustive they are rather complete. I guess that is one thing that someone could knock about the book is the lack of depth on certain topics but I think that for an introductory work it covers all the topics with meaning. Also, keep in mind, the audience is not for seasoned apologists, it is an introductory book for parents who want to give direction to their kids on Christianity and why we believe it to be true. What’s more, she gives several references in the back of the book where people can read more if they want to know more about the topic. The reference section in the back of the book is an extremely valuable resource to readers. Many times when I am reading a book that has new concepts I want to know where I can find out more information but the references aren’t there. A strength of Natasha’s book is that she provides the resources and gives parents a lot of addition avenues to explore should they want to look more into any section or chapter. And for those of you who enjoy science, you will not be subjected to a fundamentalist, superficial treatment of evolution. Rather, you will see fair points made for and against evolution, young earth creationism, and old earth creationism. The research done in section five of the book (conversations about science) was in my opinion, one of the strongest parts of the book.Natasha’s book is a game changer. Never before has there been a book directed to parents on how they can have meaningful conversations with their children about Christianity. Moreover, the book looks into the evidence for God, the historicity of Jesus, and the origin of the Bible. All three of those topics are so important but spoken about so little in the church. I am glad Natasha has written this book and while the year is still young, it is on top of my list of “Best Reads of 2016”. I’d encourage all of you, whether you have children or not, to examine this book and look at the overwhelming evidence for the Christian faith.Grace and PeaceRob JohnsonApologetics 105

As a Christian parent, one of the things most important to me is bringing my son up in faith in Christ. As a man with an MA in Christian Apologetics, I know that my child will face many challenges going forward, and that the Christian faith has the answers. The problem, it seems, is figuring out how to unite these two–apologetics and child-rearing–in a way that can be understood by children, without being domineering or scary. Natasha Crain’s book, Keeping Your Kids on God’s Side, is an answer to prayers about this important topic. The book features 40 “conversations” that can be had with children centered around topics from why we believe the Bible and textual criticism to the existence of God to questions about science and Christianity. Each of these chapters provides an introduction to the topic at hand. Crain utilizes stories of her own children quite well to demonstrate how these conversations might play out–or how they might get started. The most helpful aspect of the book is that it provides a kind of all-in-one reference for common questions and apologetic topics that can be used to start children on the right path towards defending their faith and the calling of 1 Peter 3:15-16. Each of the 40 conversations is one that is worth having, and is often accompanied with quotes from prominent atheist thinkers to show the objections often raised to the faith.Crain also does a good job of presenting multiple sides of controversial topics without specifying a side. For example, in the chapter on hell, she presents historical Christian positions (a literal view, a figurative view with eternal punishment, and the conditionalist view). The one place there is a bit of a slip on this regard is when it comes to the creation and evolution debate. She adequately presents both young and old earth creationism, but only gives a view like theistic evolution a passing mention, despite having seemingly increasing support among evangelicals.A downside to the variety of topics that Crain presents is that she is only ever able to scratch the surface on each. The type of book it is basically makes this a necessity, and Crain does provide resources for further reading. Parents should note that they will need to utilize these resources for continuing conversations.Keeping your Kids on God’s Side is a phenomenal work. It is the kind of book that parents will come back to time and time again. Not only that, but it has broad enough appeal that it serves as an excellent general apologetic work. It will energize parents to start these conversations with their children and give them the tools to keep them going. I highly recommend this work. The Good+Broad-minded approach that doesn’t tell readers what to think on controversial topics+Clear tone and presentation+Astounding number of topics introduced with valuable information+Offers several key points to help discuss topics with childrenThe Bad-Very brief on several points-Doesn’t address full breadth of views on creation/evolutionDisclaimer: I received the book for review from the author. I was not obligated to provide any specific kind of feedback whatsoever.SourceNatasha Crain, Keeping Your Kids on God’s Side (Eugene, OR: Bethany House Publishers, 2016).
