...which is ironic, because the author himself mentions that the reason Ajax is becoming so popular is that people demand better fit and finish in their presentation.This man DESPERATELY needs an editor (or a new/better one). Sentances run on and on, without ever getting directly to the point. Here's a great example of what's wrong with the book: in the first two chapters, he describes Ajax in painstaking (almost insulting) detail, but never really nails down WHAT "REST" is. Even after reading a section in the begining of Chapter 2, "Understanding REST Theory," I had to go to the Wikipedia page to learn just EXACTLY what it is.This is a good resource for learning Ajax, but there are other good reasources out there, too -- ones that are better written and won't leave you fighting to understand what's going on through every page.

Buy whatever Ajax primer you want, work with it, get excited about it, but before you use it in a real application, buy and read this book. Never expect to learn about a subject from a patterns book, just expect to leapfrog some painful learning experiences. This book helps you jump from experienced beginner to reasonable competence status without having to build a lot of bad applications first.

Instead of refreshing the entire page, individual elements are changed based on user input and new data pulled from the server. The level of interaction and sophistication involved in using AJAX makes it a force to be reckoned with. Because of that, it's essential to have a book that covers the underpinnings of this technology.True to the title of this book, it is packed with good theoretical discussions of how AJAX works and good strategies for how to use AJAX. Knowing all of the tricks isn't worth much unless you can apply your knowledge in a meaningful way. An example of what I considered impressive was the material on caching strategies: AJAX has always struck me as being a high-transfer way to presenting information and instead this section makes AJAX into a means of saving traffic.Unlike other books on AJAX, this book covers design patterns for the technology. How do you divide data for distribution? Answer: Use the Content Chunking Patterns. How do you effectively maintain state or at least the impression of maintenance? Answer: the persistent communications pattern. How do you make all of the potential data available at the user's fingertips? Answer: the infinite data pattern. In the nine patterns presented the author explores much of theory, and that helps you strategize when it comes time to code your own applications. Each pattern has a dedicated chapter that first presents the intent of the pattern, then the motivation for using it in the context of AJAX, a list of possible applications of the design pattern, and associated design patterns. Next, the design pattern's architecture is explained in the context of solving an actual problem. Finally, the implementation is shown via code and the user's interaction with various webpages. At the end of each pattern's chapter there are "highlights" of what has just been presented.Up to now concrete examples of using AJAX were copious and usable theory has been hard to come by, making this book a welcome volume. I know how to write Javascript, I know what XML is. What I needed to know was how to bring it all together using design patterns that make sense for AJAX. This book accomplished that. What this means is that the book explains how REST is used in developing Ajax web applications.REST is a style on how to send data between a client and a server. Until now, the basics client/server or browser/server requests has been the same for years no matter what server technology you use (ASP, PHP, and JSP). With Ajax the way data is passed and retrieved to the client id different now. So, the way we architect web applications must be different too. Common sense right? Well, this is the first book that I've seen so far that explains Ajax in this way.The first chapter goes into an overview of Ajax and how it has changed how web applications work. It gives some good examples of various Google web applications and explains how the data is sent to the client behind the scenes. It also talks about the various architectural styles of development.The second chapter starts focuses on REST theory and data will be sent via the XMLHttpRequest object. It gives a good detailed explanation of the methods and properties and a sample class written in JavaScript that can be used. It also illustrates a debugging process of this class (in Firebox) and shows you how to run through the different states of the XMLHttpRequest.The third chapter reviews a new pattern ("content chunking") which the author shows you how to incrementally build an HTML page while separating the logic so that each section of the site can be loaded by user interaction. It's something I've never even thought about as I've recently read different Ajax books. Unfortunately, I cannot go into detail of this chapter (otherwise I'd be writing a book), but believe me it is an eye opener.The fourth chapter reviews another pattern ("cache controller") which is the pattern how Google created Google Maps in how the site temporarily stores data per session. This is another reason to buy this book as well. Again, I've never seen this methodology discussed in any other Ajax book.The rest of the book goes through other patterns in developing Ajax web applications that will enlighten you in helping you create the next generation of web apps (web 2.0). This book is skinny (less than 400), but each chapter really goes straight to the point in explaining each pattern and how Ajax can really be used correctly.A definite must buy for any web developer wanting to truly understand Ajax.

This book is a collection of short essays from two points of view, each of which being one of the authors. The over arching theme is how to navigate a marriage with someone with Asperger's, but what I believe it really has achieved is a collection of small lessons on how to have a relationship with anyone.While Tom's condition may be an issue, the solutions this couple have come up with to communicate and exist together would work for any relationship.This is by no means a marriage self-help book, but I would say you can't read it without coming away with some a-ha moments about interpersonal communication.Each story is charming and has humorous asides. After a few of them you start to recognize the voice of each author and you can tell right away which perspective the story is coming from.I enjoyed this and my only criticism is that I wish there had been more, I feel like I was just getting to know these people and then it was over. That's good though, always leave them wanting more.

In these short essays Tom and Linda Peters talk about their meeting, dating and married life in "Our Socially Awkward Marriage: Stories From an Asperger's Relationship" Tom is a Grammy Award nominated music performer and composes music for silent films. Linda writes full-time, and formerly worked with adults with mental, emotional and intellectual disabilities.The couple met on Chemistry.com and Linda admitted that one of their first dates was at the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium watching a documentary about spawning fish. Its unclear if the couple expected readers to appreciate or be entertained by their style of writing, which was matter-of fact, direct and to the point. Of course, this is a symptom of the Autism Spectrum Disorder which was reclassified in 2013-- (Asperger's Syndrome was dropped). There were good intentions of raising awareness and explaining to readers the inner workings of the mind, thoughts, and actions of a person with ASD. The tendency to focus on a persons surroundings, objects, special interests, etc. was evident. Tom related an instance where he was determined to find where a pattern formed and began in a decorative tile design.Apparently the couple live in a very old house in Los Angeles, and Linda related a story of a cat always seen out of the corner of her eye, observed sleeping on top of a sunlit wood pile--this was the best and most interesting story in this collection. The cat might have been a ghost according to the couple. The idea of sharing life stories about their marriage to educate reader's about ASD was admirable. 3* GOOD.

This book starts in great ordinariness. It does describe Asperger's syndrome. In that respect it is informative. It is also easy reading with short chapters. What is truly remarkable about this book is the chapters that give insights of use way beyond the Asperger's world. If you want to live well, this book will help you do just that. So the book is valuable for much more than what it can tell you about Asperger's.

I'm married happily to a kind hearted Aspie but was running into difficulty because both of us were in transition and I was feeling unloved. Just the first chapter got me started back on track, and. The rest of this book made me realize how well suited we still were to one another. I'm a retired therapist and he is a scientist. Some of what was going on was stuff I had not considered, so I was grateful for this entertaining book and am clear that most therapists would not have beenable particularly helpful without the inside track on Aspergers.

When I saw the title, "Our Socially Awkward Marriage", I couldn't help but identify- but when I opened the description page on Amazon, I new I would have to read this book. My husband and I are in a similar relationship- he was diagnosed late in life with Aspergers (after we were married), and I am considered "Neurotypical", (though I'd say I'm pretty socially awkward myself). When our marriage was facing challenges, I turned to every Aspergers book I could find. That led me to truly believing that our marriage could never work. Through counseling and figuring out how we each work, we've rekindled our relationship and found the joy, happiness, and communication that Tom and Linda describe of their own marriage in this book.It's refreshing to find a book related to Aspergers with so much positivity, with anecdotes that we live everyday, and some of the ways the authors manage their differences to find common ground and a common love for each other.This book definitely helps support a relationship like ours, but is a great read for anyone in any kind of relationship. It shares how clear communication is key, and the joy shared with each other is most important. With humor, Tom and Linda have shared just a selection of stories that will resonate with anyone in love.

As it was written by a couple with one partner with Aspergers, I found ways to comfortably relate to my own partner. The lessons I found in this book were invaluable to my relationship . I'm able to look at him and view our future in a more positive light.

I knew very little about Aspergers, I guess I still do! But while I learned a little about Aspergers, and I learned a whole lot about life! About surviving relationships by accepting each other for who you are. Why doesn’t matter. Just understanding and giving each other the space they need to be themselves. I gleaned some very great thoughts on dealing with STUFF. Making that happen will be a real challenge, but the rationale behind doing it makes sense. Old Sai’s horse.......I really like this story, the idea of accepting life as it comes. Could be good, could be bad! Either way, life is going to happen. And there is really no second guessing why things are what they are. We are Divinely put here on this Earth, and we each have our own purposes in life, and part of that is accepting others as they are. They too were Divinely placed. Thank you for some wonderful life lessons, served with a side of love and humor.

I've read all the books in this series and until the last few, I had been enjoying them. However, the stories just aren't as interesting as they used to be and the "who done it" isn't that hard to figure out.In Chocolate Cream Pie Murder, Hannah has decided to tell the town the truth about Ross at the end of a Sunday church service. That is far from the end of it though as Ross is still causing trouble and stress for her when he shows up in town a few days later.The exact reason behind the murder in this book wasn't fully obvious but I strongly suspected part of it and knew who would be killed and who did it LONG before the murder actually occurred. The first 3/4 of the book takes place over 8 days in February as Hannah is still trying to deal with the aftermath of her learning the truth about her "marriage" to Ross a few month earlier. Once the murder finally occurs, it is solved in a day or so over a couple of chapters. Then the (sadly) very predictable final chapter and we are left once again to wonder what will happen in yet another book. Yawn....A few thoughts on plot points:I do like the rapport between the main characters. I also like the occasional bits of humour thrown in by various characters. That being said, I do cringe when Delores gets on one of her criticizing streaks about how Hannah dresses or does her hair/makeup. I'm not referring to Hannah and friends being stuck at the condo during the blizzard - that was an interesting dynamic. Instead, I felt that the following three segments could easily have been cut and replaced by real plot development.1) Delores asking Hannah to come up with an appetizer for her and Stephanie Bascomb, the ensuing discussion on sugared grapes, Hannah's trip to the Red Owl and the recipe.2) Readers all know that Moishe and Cuddles love to have their chase in Hannah's condo. Full out details of the (usual) three laps ONCE per book is more than sufficient. Any more than that is filler.3)The stress on Hannah is obvious but trying to express it in a dream sequence is lame and tired. Ms Fluke had done this in the past and it just feels like it was forced and inserted as an excuse to bring in yet another recipe.In the more recent books it seems that Ms Fluke has been trying to be more of a cookbook author than cozy mystery author. The actual story and plot seems to get thinner and the recipes more plentiful and detailed. Most of the recipes list the brand name for some of the ingredients which makes me wonder if she is being paid for naming the brand or receiving free/discounted merchandise in return. Most recipes include extremely detailed directions geared to a novice cook which is fine for some but rather boring for more experienced cooks. With the Kindle version of Chocolate Cream Pie Murder there was no recipe index at the beginning or end so if you didn't bookmark it, good luck finding any of the recipes you may actually have been interested in trying.Personally, I'd prefer to see ALL of the recipes at the END of the book rather than stuffed in at the end of almost every chapter. It would be far less disruptive to the flow of the story if you could just keep reading rather than having to flip/scroll through several pages of recipe info before finding the next chapter. Then again, if Ms Fluke were to put all the recipes at the end, it would be a bit too obvious how little of the book was actually dealing with the story. It's hard to tell from the Kindle edition, but my guess would be at least 25% of this book is the recipes - probably more.Yes, Hannah owns and operates "The Cookie Jar" but you don't have to share every recipe mentioned in every book. Pick a few - maybe 6-10 and put them at the end of the book. Then every few years release another Lake Eden Cookbook for those who want it all.

I've read every Hannah Swensen book and this one was a big disappointment. Nothing happened for 3/4ths of the book and then they rushed a murder and solving it at the end. The plot was ridiculous and it truly seemed like a filler until the next novel comes out. I'm truly tired of the writer drawing things out so that there are more questions than answers at the end. Hannah's love life is pitiful and I'm over it. It's a shame because I read the books because I really enjoy the characters. I'll likely look for the next book at the library instead of pre-ordering like I've done with the last three books.

This was the worst book I have read in a long while. The writing is so elementary, way too many recipes and too repetitive. No mystery build up...felt like it was written by a twelve year old. Amazing how she painstakingly told us how to cook all the recipes and then repeated the recipe and directions at end of each chapter. I was so disappointed and I do not care that she left a truly teenage cliffhanger at the end...I will not read another of her books.

Too many recipes and not enough substance with this story. Will not purchase future books but check out from library.

I have followed this series from the beginning but her writing is starting to get very frustrating. This book was more about food and recipes than getting to the plot. Even the debates Hannah had between herself got to the point that I skipped over them. I'm tired of her waffling between Norman and Mike and now that she's probably pregnant, that's going get even worse. I think I'll just stick to Nora Roberts and Mary Higgins Clark for my romantic mystery fix. At least they haven't gotten into the soap opera thing. Hopefully they never will.

This is the last Hannah Swenson mystery I will ever read. I’ve read every one of these mysteries and I have no idea why they have become more like cookbooks than mysteries. Every conversation seems to be some description of some food that Hannah or Michele are coking, baking or thinking about cooking or baking. It is completely unrealistic that someone would get up in front of a church congregation to discuss something so personal and so nobody’s business! I also became so annoyed that Hannah has gone from gutsy, smart business woman to a milk toast fainting all over the place. It seems like this book was written by 3 different people. The ending was also ridiculous and seemed like it was thought of in 5 minutes because it’s time to wrap up the story. There were absolutely no surprises in this at all. I knew what Hannah’s stomach issue would be about the first time she felt sick. A real lack of imagination and I have no interest in pursuing how that turns out. I am really, really disappointed in this book and I feel duped by the author. No more Hannah Swenson for me.

I’m a fan of this series, but after 24 books, I sometimes feel irritated with Hanna’s lack of personal knowledge (has she read nothing but cookbooks since she left college?) and her relationship with Norman and Mike. Also, this book a long time to get to the actual mystery and the wrap up ( I.e.: figuring out who was the killer) was rushed. In all, this book seems like a place filler between books 23 & 25. If you like the series, then I’d recommend the book for answering the questions from book 23. Just assume that it’s not as suspenseful as some of the others

The last couple books have been more like short stories than a full book. Story line is rushed and predictable— no suspense left at all. Author more concerned with including a cliff hanger for the next book than developing the story. As short as these books have become, there should be a new one every couple months instead of maybe once a year.

Significantly impacted my view on myself and how I handle money and success. The caveat here is that you're willing to put in the work and adopt the tools which Stephen details, otherwise the book is meaningless in its application. I found that a casual read didn't do much for me, however re-reading, digesting and mulling the principles (part of doing the work) was significant in its results.I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wishes to understand their true views towards money and understand what the implications of those views are.

Everyone that is interested in being a good steward of His money , should read this book. It is amazing!...what's more, it will really make you think what triggers your inside to spend money on ...whatever it is you spend it on. Awesome. Thank you Stephen K. DeSilva.

I was used to Dave Ramsey as a Christian on money. So I guess I was expecting how to do investments, savings, budgeting etc. It really wasn't what I was expecting- but I really got changed reading it. The mini-sozo sessions was sweet (especially since it's his wifes ministy!) I loved the insights as to the reasons why we tithe and give (so we can be like our Father) and I loved how he described the "potted plant" syndrome. That REALLY helped my familys finances. Excited to read it again (and again)You want freedom? You want more Jesus? You want to read this book.FYI- I totally support (and follow) Dave Ramsey, wanted to make that clear.

Stephen teaches a straight-out-of -the -bible meaning of prosperity. Very refreshing and deeply insightful. I love the vision of the river and turning towards the throne to see the good things flowing downstream towards you. This is a book that you keep and read over and over again. There is so much in this book that you will get deeper revelation every time you read it. I highly recommend it!

As I study climate change, it also gives me invaluable perspective on art of what we are living through. But also the history made readable to 'lay readers' (some background in bio. sci.) this listening experience is great. It describes some of the mass extinctions, and the possible mechanisms for the rebirth of life after, e.g. 'snow ball earth' when an ice age had the entire earth covered! Also, the inevitable production of life under the right circumstances to begin from carbon and nitrogen molecules was interesting and entirely believable.He also takes you through the development of various life forms, with the reminders that we are talking about 'geologic time'. A great 'read' (I listened!) and will continue to enjoy this set of CDs for some time. Always something more to pick up on with another listen! Thanks!

Wonderful addition to our 7th grade classroom library.

I really appreciated how complicated things are. T is scared and worried *and* wants to be able to love and trust his brother like he used to. Lamont is trying and wants to belong, but he's proud and resentful. All T's friends want him to be happy, and they want their neighborhood to be safe. Forgiveness isn't easy, and it's a choice. It's something you give, and you don't have to give it.This info-dumped a bit at the beginning, but once the book settled in, I liked the writing style better.I love Linda -- the stuff she's working through, the way she's there for T, even her friendship with Carmela.Loved the diving plot line.CW: police brutality, gun violence/threat of gun violence, mention of parental death, cancer, sickle cell attack/stroke, prison brutality, racism.

If you want your physics by the pound, Modern Classical Physics (MCP) is your book, and 2017 Nobel Laureate, Kip Thorne is your man. To over use a cliche, this 9.5 pound, 1511-page tome, is a tour de force. I received it as a 2017 Christmas present. What a gift!Sold as a first-year graduate course in Physics, anyone who has browsed through it, would discover as I did, that this is certainly true if the graduate course in question is one of the caliber of a Cal Tech, Princeton or Stanford University. However, at most American universities, this content would be broken up into six or more second-year or above graduate level courses.As a dilettante, and a Physicist wanna-be, I only wanted to get right to the sexy stuff, Relativity, Quantum Mechanics and Cosmology, but first Kip had to give us a little “Roo-Roo,” called optics, fluids, plasmas, statistical physics and elasticity. Indeed, only as an afterthought, does it all make complete sense, because at various points in my physics life, I too have had to grapple with each of these as a side issue while pursuing other topics. I guess the logic is: Why not treat them all up front and get them out of the way?A warning to those squeamish about mathematics: Be ready to rumble, to jump off the high end of the diving board, as the book assumes everything up to Tensors to be elementary mathematics (Say what?).The good news is that if you are old like me, you don’t have to worry about working out the exercises. Imagining the broad outlines of their respective solutions is quite sufficient — provided you do not cheat. You must play the mind games fairly in order to feel that you really understand.I guess my point is this: You only need a good enough grasp of the concepts to be able to follow the mathematics to their logical conclusions without getting stuck. As usual, this means from time to time, you must consult and review older mathematics texts, or run the risk of getting tied in knots trying to unravel the matrix notation implicit in most of the more generalized formulations. But as anyone who has been reading any modern physics texts knows, that is par for the course. In this case, it is par for six different courses. It helps too if you have been over this material before, in particular, the geometric paradigm, because prior knowledge will kick-in at the right time.One reviewer complained that he did not need any handholding. Well, I say speak for yourself? For me, the more handholding the better. I found it especially helpful for the authors to give us a thorough overview of his approach, and then tell us where earlier topics would be inserted and used in the grand finale — and then pointed back to those references once we got there!Going back and forth, not only was useful, but necessary. In fact without these critical intercessions, it was quite easy for my mind to drift off. Statistical Physics, Optics and Fluids, okay? Even Elasticity too, but why would I need a primer in Plasma physics in order to prepare for Relativity and Cosmology?It didn’t matter, I cheated anyway, and jumped forward to the main menu items, General relativity and Cosmology. But I will be the first to admit that even after reviewing every U-Tube lecture on Einstein’s field equations, and going over Richard Feynman’s two-volume “Lectures in Physics” for the third or fourth time, these authors’ treatment of the Field Equations were still scary. Even with that much preparation, the presentation in this book remained difficult.My plan going forward is to stick with the difficult parts until I am satisfied that I understand them well enough for my own needs. This is a once-in-a-lifetime book, and I am going to enjoy it for years to come. What a treat for a home-grown frustrated Physicist! 10 stars!

I would like to emphasize an aspect of this book that none of the other reviewers have mentioned. The very first paragraph on page 1 offers what I consider the central vision of this ambitious text:"In this book, a central theme will be a Geometric Principle: The laws of physics must all be expressible as geometric (coordinate-independent and reference-frame independent) relationships between geometric objects (scalars, vectors, tensors,...) that represent physical entities."Kip Thorne, Charles Misner, and John Archibald Wheeler attempted to fulfill this same geometric vision for General Relativity in the early 1970s with the publication of the 1279-page landmark work, Gravitation. One can therefore see this recent book by Blandford and Thorne as the extension of the geometric program to many areas of classical physics. For those of us who are "true believers" in the geometric program, this book is a welcome addition to the literature.One remark on the physical quality of the book under review. Despite having 1511 pages, the book is hardbound and sturdy enough to hold up under years of study. The paper quality is first-rate, and there are even color graphics scattered throughout. Princeton University Press is to be commended for producing a first-class textbook at a reasonable price. Their recent hardbound republication of the classic book Gravitation is also extremely well done, and for an amazingly low price.

Superb, every scientist should have a copy. Math says what is true, physics says what is real and engineers say what can be achieved. This is an essential book ties it all together using the geometric methodology.

Love the book, expect to spend years happily working with it, as with Thorne's other massive book, Gravitation. But if an author is going to write exercises into the text ( five different types!) then why not provide answers, at least to every other? That is my only disappointment, a crushing one at that. I would have liked to have some confirmation that I can work with the concepts.

This book is an excellent treatment of a broad range of topics in classical physics, including many topics not usually covered in standard courses focused on the traditional divisions of the subject. The treatment is modern and accessible.

Explanations and applications of all classical topics covered in this text/reference are eloquently written and presented clearly, and flow from "the calm to the dynamic flow of fluid dynamics". Physicists, make sure you have a reference text of "Applied Mathematics" by your side while reviewing the concepts of this text. The text can be used at both the undergraduate and graduate levels as well as post graduate levels in both Physics, and Mathematics.

I took this course (Ph. 136 Applications of Classical Physics) at Caltech 33 years ago from Kip Thorne (I also had Roger Blandford as a professor for high energy astrophysics) - they are both top notch physicists and teachers as well. Some have wished the book was broken up in 3-4 books. I disagree, I suspect most of these complaints are by readers in the early chapters of the book. But what happens when you get to the later parts, on lets say, plasma physics, and need to refer back to a statistical mechanics chapter - and the other book is somewhere else. I am glad it is one book. My only criticism is that the book could be shorter. The authors spend many pages telling you every chapter and every part what they are going to do in the coming pages - in my opinion they should just dive in and do it. I don't need a readers or professor's teaching guide for a graduate level textbook.
